Configuration Road Map

The configuration road map gives information that you can use to understand the configurations that are available with the NearStore VTL appliance. The configuration road map provides a guide that you can use in conjunction with the task sections to configure the system.

This section outlines the steps needed to configure your NearStore VTL, after you set up the system using the NearStore VTL Installation and Setup Instructions. (The NearStore VTL Installation and Setup Instructions document is shipped with the VTL and covers such initial configuration steps as cabling, initial power up, and IP address assignment.)

Before using the VTL for backups, or other production data storage, do the following:

  1. Log in to the system using the default username (admin) and password (NetApp). See the section called “Logging in to a NearStore VTL Appliance” for details.

  2. (Optional) Change the administrative password of the system.

  3. Verify that the system time is synchronized to either the browser host or a Network Time Protocol (NTP) server. If you do not synchronize the system time in this manner, the deferred cloning times might be incorrect. The log times might also be incorrect.

  4. (Optional) Define storage pools.

  5. (Optional) Enable host access controls. You can control which hosts access which libraries.

  6. If you enabled host access control, identify the hosts so you can assign them access to specific devices. (The hosts must be able to access the VTL appliance over Fibre Channel, which means they are either directly attached or are in the same zone.)

  7. Create a RAID group.

  8. Create virtual libraries.

VTL appliances come preconfigured with many library definitions, but you can also define your own. If you want to define your own, do this before creating the libraries.

  9. (Optional) If you created hosts, you can now assign virtual libraries to those hosts.

  10. Create virtual tapes.

  11. Configure your host systems and applications to use the VTL.

Now, or at a later date, you might also want to create a tape operator account to control access to the VTL, configure the VTL to work with physical tape drives, and import or export physical tapes into the VTL appliance.
