The support tools include upgrading the firmware, performing a diagnostic upload to NetApp and configuring AutoSupport, the automatic monitoring services.
The firmware (operating system) of the NearStore VTL appliance can be upgraded from a host networked to the system.
Before starting, verify that you have placed a copy of the new firmware in a location that can be accessed from the VTL appliance.

Login to the VTL appliance GUI as admin, making sure the firmware you want to install is on the system you are logging in from.
From the Configuration Tasks menu, located on the left side of the screen, click the Support Tools task category.
Click the Software Image Upgrade tab, located in the upper portion of the screen.
Click “To install software image from a downloaded file, click here.”
Click “Browse” to navigate to the firmware file.
The new firmware is downloaded to the VTL appliance and installed.
You can copy configuration data, diagnostic logs, historical logs, and disk analysis results to a workstation or other network-attached system.
Complete this task to copy configuration data, diagnostic logs, historical logs, and disk analysis to another system:
From the Configuration Tasks menu, located on the left side of the screen, click the Network Appliances Services task category.
Click the Diagnostic Upload tab, located in the upper portion of the screen.
The Diagnostic Upload screen appears.
This screen displays the appliance name (if assigned), the appliance hardware serial number, type and size of the logs available for uploading (configuration, diagnostic, historical, and disk analysis). The size of each log is listed in parentheses after the log name.
Click the box after the log name to select (or if already selected, deselect) the data to upload.
Click Apply to start the upload.
The NetApp AutoSupport service can be set to notify NetApp support services about the status of NetApp systems. AutoSupport is sent every Sunday, shortly after midnight, appliance local time, with routine status information and when there are significant problems or indicators of pending problems. You can also configure AutoSupport service to send the same information to a local administrator.
Complete this task to configure AutoSupport:
From the Configuration Tasks menu, located on the left side of the screen, click the Support Tools task category.
Click the NetApp AutoSupport tab, located in the upper portion of the screen.
The AutoSupport Configuration screen appears.
Near the bottom of the page, select the check box Enable AutoSupport Notification to enable AutoSupport notification. Selecting the check box again disables AutoSupport, and grays out the form fields.
The AutoSupport E-mail Recipients List (to) is pre-filled out with the address autosupport@netapp.com. This is the address for NetApp AutoSupport e-mails. If you do not want AutoSupport e-mail sent to NetApp, delete this entry, or change it to a local address to which you want the e-mail sent.
(Optional) Fill in an e-mail address in the AutoSupport E-mail Recipients List (cc) field. You can use this address if you want to send the e-mail to additional destinations.
Click Apply.
(Optional) click “here” in “To send AutoSupport Notifications right now, please click here” to go to the screen for sending a test message.
You can disable the sending of AutoSupport and Action notification e-mails by clicking on “here” in “To disable AutoSupport & Action Notifications Aimless, click here.”
