This chapter describes the commands that you use to upgrade VTL, shelf controller, and disk firmware for the NearStore VTL appliance.

Some commonly used shelf controller and disk (but not VTL) firmware images are stored on VTL appliances when they are shipped. You can use a CLI command to install one or more of these prepackaged image files.

In addition, VTL, shelf controller, and disk firmware upgrade files are available for download on the NOW NetApp on the Web® site at http://now.netapp.com/. You can download a file, upload it to the VTL appliance through an FTP client, and then use a CLI command to install it.

After you download a VTL, shelf controller, or disk firmware file from the NOW site, follow this procedure to upload the file to the VTL appliance:

  1. On your client computer, from the directory in which you stored the downloaded firmware file, use an FTP client to connect to the VTL appliance:

    FTP> open VTL_host_name|VTL_ip_address

Enter the same user name and password that you use to access the VTL CLI or graphical user interface (GUI).

  2. Transfer the downloaded firmware file to the VTL appliance:

    FTP> put firmware_file_name

  3. Make sure that the file was uploaded successfully, as shown:

    FTP> ls

The file's name and size should be displayed. You are now ready to use a CLI command to install the firmware image.

Note

Once you begin to install a firmware image that was downloaded, you will not be able to see that image file on the VTL appliance through the FTP ls command. When installation is complete, the uploaded firmware image file is deleted from the FTP space. If you have uploaded the wrong file, the only way to delete it is to reboot the appliance.

If you upload a file larger than 50 MB, an error occurs, and the file is not uploaded.
