Managing Snapshot Copies

In the Manage Snapshots page, you can view details of Snapshot copies and the volumes they reside on as well as the date they were created on and the status of the Snapshot copy.

You can choose to view all the volumes or only the volume you want to see, by selecting the name of the volume from the View Volume drop-down menu and clicking View.

Using the View Snapshots drop-down menu, you can choose to view all the Snapshot copies, hourly Snapshot copies, nightly Snapshot copies, or weekly Snapshot copies.

You can also search for a particular Snapshot copy by selecting the “with string” option and entering the search criteria in the text field box next to the View Snapshots drop-down menu and clicking View.

A search done in this way displays only those Snapshot copy or copies of the selected volume or All Volumes (depending on the option chosen in the View Volume filter) whose Snapshot copy-name or names contains the string entered in the text-box

The text field works only with the “with string”  option in the View Snapshots drop-down menu.

By selecting the View Space Usage checkbox and clicking View, you can see the total amount of space on each volume and the amount used.

Note: If Single File Snap Restore is running, the Manage Snapshots page may take some time to load. This is applicable only if the View Space Usage checkbox is selected.

Note: By default, the Manage Snapshots page does not display the disk space used by a Snapshot copy or the cumulative total of the disk space used by that particular Snapshot copy and the preceding one. This information is displayed in the Used and Total fields on the page. These two fields are visible only if you select the View Space Usage checkbox and click View.

The information is not visible by default, in order to avoid any delay while displaying the page, which could happen if Single File Snap Restore (sfsr) is in process.

In the Manage Snapshots page you can also rename, delete, add, or configure a Snapshot copy.

Renaming a Snapshot copy

To rename an existing Snapshot copy, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Manage Snapshots page, click on the name of the Snapshot copy you want to rename.

    Result:
The Rename Snapshot page is displayed.

  2. In the Snapshot Name field, enter the new name for the Snapshot copy.

  3. Click Rename.

Deleting a Snapshot copy

Data ONTAP deletes Snapshot copies automatically; however, you might want to delete Snapshot copies before the preset time.

Deleting a Snapshot copy frees up disk space, but you should choose carefully which Snapshot copy to delete to free up the disk space you need for the file system. Before trying to conserve space by deleting a large Snapshot copy file, examine the cumulative values in the display. If two adjacent Snapshot copy files show little difference in the cumulative values, most of the data referenced by the Snapshot copies are the same. In this case, removing one of the Snapshot copies does not free much disk space.

To delete an existing Snapshot copy, complete the following steps:

  1. Select the checkbox for the Snapshot copy you want to delete.

  2. Click Delete.

  3. When the confirmation box displays, click OK to delete the Snapshot copy.

Adding a Snapshot copy

To add a Snapshot copy, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Manage Snapshots page, click Add Snapshot.

    Result:
The Add Snapshot page is displayed.

  2. In the Volume field, use the drop-down list to select the volume to which you want to add a Snapshot copy.

  3. In the Snapshot Name field, enter a name for the new Snapshot copy.

  4. Click Add.

Configuring a Snapshot copy

To configure Snapshot copies, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Volume column, click on the name of the volume for which you want to configure Snapshot copies.

    Result:
The Configure Snapshots window is displayed.

  2. In the Snapshot Reserve field, enter the percentage of the reserve to use for Snapshot copies.

  3. In the Snapshot Directory Visible field, select the checkbox if you want to make the .snapshot directory visible.

  4. In the Scheduled Snapshots field, select the checkbox if you want to enable scheduled Snapshot copies.

  5. In the Snapshots to Keep fields (Weekly, Nightly, and Hourly), enter how many Snapshot copies you want to keep on this volume for each period of time.

  6. In the Hourly Snapshots Schedule clocks, select the checkboxes that correspond to the hours you want to have Snapshot copies taken, both for a.m. and p.m.

  7. Click Apply.

Note: FilerView does not support managing Snapshot copies for aggregates. Use the command-line interface to manage aggregate Snapshot copies. For details, see the Data ONTAP Data Protection, Online Backup and Recovery Guide.
