NAME

download - install new version of Data ONTAP

SYNOPSIS

download

DESCRIPTION

download copies Data ONTAP executable files from /etc/boot into the filer's boot block from which the system boots.

To install a new version of Data ONTAP first install the files for the new release onto the filer over NFS, and then download the new executables using download.

EXAMPLE

This example shows the sequence of commands to upgrade the software on the filer toaster, which is assumed to be a filer with an x86 processor, from the administrative client adminhost. It assumes that the "System Files" floppy disk has been inserted in adminhost's floppy drive. Characters typed by the user are shown in bold.
  adminhost# mount toaster:/ /mnt
  adminhost# cd /mnt
  adminhost# tar xvf /dev/fd0
  x tar_image.Z, 1329935 bytes, 2598 tape blocks
  x install_netapp, 966 bytes, 2 tape blocks
  adminhost# ./install_netapp /mnt
  install_netapp: uncompress tar_image.Z
  install_netapp: cd "/mnt"; tar xvf "/mnt/tar_image"
  x etc/boot/1-x86, 111956 bytes, 219 tape blocks
  x etc/boot/netapp_4.0-x86, 1334344 bytes, 2607 tape blocks
  x etc/boot/netapp-x86 symbolic link to netapp_4.0-x86
  x etc/boot/0-x86, 1804 bytes, 4 tape blocks
  x etc/man/man1/na_arp.1, 4122 bytes, 9 tape blocks
  ...
  x etc/httpd.mimetypes.sample, 3175 bytes, 7 tape blocks
  install_netapp: cd "/mnt"; rm -rf tar_image install_netapp
  adminhost# telnet toaster
  Trying 192.9.200.82 ...
  Connected to toaster.
  Escape character is '^]'.

  Password:
  toaster> download
  toaster> reboot
  Connection closed by foreign host.
  adminhost#

After the filer has rebooted, the version of the newly installed software can be verified with the version command (see na_version(1)).

BUGS

In Release 1.1 and later the prompt is set automatically based on the hostname, it no longer needs to be set explicitly in /etc/rc. When upgrading from Release 1.0 the line that sets the prompt explicitly should be removed; otherwise, the filer will print a harmless message.

In Release 1.0 the /etc/man directory contained the man pages directly without the normal UNIX hierarchy. In Release 1.1 and later, /etc/man is formatted like UNIX, with subdirectories named man1, man4, man5, and man8, so that /nfs/toaster/etc/man can be added to the MANPATH variable for the UNIX man(1) command. When upgrading from Release 1.0 the old man pages in /etc/man should be deleted.
