NAME

arp - address resolution display and control

SYNOPSIS

arp hostname

arp -a

arp -d hostname

arp -s hostname ether_address [ temp ] [ pub ]

arp -s hostname pvc iface vpi vci [ aal [ encap [ addr ] ] ]

arp -l pvc iface vpi vci [ aal [ encap ] ]

arp -x iface vpi vci

DESCRIPTION

The arp program displays and modifies the Internet-toEthernet address translation tables used by the address resolution protocol.

When an ATM interface is present, arp also displays and modifies the Internet address to ATM virtual circuit translation tables used by the ATM address resolution protocol.

With no flags, the program displays the current ARP entry for hostname. The host may be specified by name or by number, using Internet dot notation.

OPTIONS

-a
The program displays all of the current ARP entries.

-d
Delete an entry for the host called hostname.

If the ARP entry for this destination host corresponds to an entry in the ATM arp table, the outgoing virtual circuit to this destination host called hostname is terminated, and the entry deleted.

-s
Create an ARP entry for the host called hostname with the Ethernet address ether_address. The Ethernet address is given as six hex bytes separated by colons. The entry will be permanent unless the word temp is given in the command. Temporary entries that consist of a complete Internet address and a matching Ethernet address are flushed from the arp table if they haven't been referenced in the past 20 minutes. A permanent entry is not flushed. If the word pub is given, the entry will be "published"; i.e., this system will act as an ARP server, responding to requests for hostname even though the host address is not its own.

An alternate format of the arp command with the -s option can be used to set an ATM arp entry for an outgoing permanent virtual circuit (PVC), using the pvc keyword in the command. All traffic for the host called hostname will be sent via the ATM interface iface using VPI vpi, VCI vci, AAL type aal and encapsulated based on encapsulation type encap. If encapsulation is specified as llc_bridged_8023 the following argument must be the 6-byte colon separated destination MAC address.

-l
Attach the IP layer to an incoming PVC. The keyword pvc needs to be specified in this command. All traffic received on the ATM interface iface using VPI vpi, VCI vci, AAL type aal and decapsulated based on encapsulation type encap, will be handed over to IP.

-x
Detach the IP layer from an incoming ATM virtual circuit. IP traffic will no longer be accepted on the specified VPI vpi and VCI vci for the specified interface iface.

NOTES

Data ONTAP does not support trailer encapsulations.

The following restrictions apply when using the arp command to set ATM arp entries for PVCs:

Currently the value of vpi specified must be zero (0) and the value of vci specified must be less than 1024.

The value of aal specified must be one of 4 or 5. If no value is specified the default value of 5 is selected.

If no encapsulation is specified, the value of null is selected. Encapsulation must be one of:

null (no encapsulation)

llc_routed (IEEE LLC encapsulation for routed PDUs)

llc_bridged_8023 (IEEE LLC encapsulation for Ethernet/802.3 bridged PDUs)

In conjunction with using the arp -s and -l options to set ATM arp entries for PVCs on the NetApp filer, the following additional procedures need to be carried out:

A complementary arp setup needs to be carried out at the remote ATM host based on the syntax specified for the software running on that host, to set an outgoing and an incoming PVC to and from the filer.

On the interconnecting ATM switch(es), virtual channels need to be assigned corresponding to the VPI/VCI entries made for the arp -s and arp -l commands on the filer and the equivalent commands on the remote host.
