NAME

cifs terminate - terminate CIFS service

SYNOPSIS

cifs terminate [ workstation ] [ -t interval ]

DESCRIPTION

If CIFS service is stopped immediately, it is possible that users could lose data in currently opened files. cifs terminate gives a chance to try to bring the file service down gracefully.

The cifs terminate command has one optional argument, which is the name of a workstation. When this option is used, open CIFS sessions for that workstation are terminated. If a workstation name is not specified, then all open CIFS sessions will be terminated, and CIFS service will no longer be available.

If the user is on the console or connecting via telnet and files are open, the operator will receive a message to confirm the number of minutes before shutdown:

There are currently 3 CIFS users that have 4 open files.

Disconnecting while files are open may cause data loss!!
How many minutes should I wait? [5]:

If this command is executed using rsh and files are opened, then the command will be refused unless the -t option is used. The argument to the -t option specifies a delay in minutes.

rsh conga cifs terminate -t 10

This will send a shutdown message to each attached user. Note that Windows 95 and Windows for Workgroups users must be running the WinPopup application to receive this notification. The message will not guarantee that all users will disconnect from the filer before CIFS service is terminated, but it does give them a warning, making it more likely that they'll disconnect.

If terminating all users, then, once the cifs terminate command has completed, no further CIFS logins will be accepted. CIFS will be disabled once the command is complete. Entering a cifs restart command can be used to re-enable CIFS.

It is possible to use a shutdown interval of 0, which will immediately terminate CIFS sessions. A message will be logged since data corruption is possible if any of the clients have files open.
