The following table describes the process for configuring a new filer (or new clustered filers) for the first time. Shaded cells in the table indicate procedures that are optional depending on the filer options that you purchased.
| Stage | What you do | Details |
|---|---|---|
Set up DHCP. | If you purchased an F700 series filer (or clustered filers) and you want to use the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to configure the filer's onboard interface (e0), follow the instructions in "Using DHCP with an F700 series filer." Using DHCP to assign an IP address to an F700 series filer enables you to use a Telnet client to complete the first-time configuration, rather than having to attach a serial console to the filer to complete the configuration.
Cable filers in a cluster. | If you purchased filers as a cluster, the filers and disk shelves need to be cabled together according to the instructions in Appendix D, "Installing the Hardware," .
Complete the worksheets. | The worksheets in Appendix B, "Worksheets," describe all the information that you are asked to enter to configure your filers.
Add the filer to a Windows NT domain. | If you purchased a license for the CIFS protocol for your filer and you plan to add the filer to a Windows NT domain, follow the instructions in "Adding the filer to a Windows NT domain."
Configure the filer. | Configure your filer according to the instructions in "Configuring the filer."
Verify the filer's network connections. | Verify that the filer is communicating on the network by following the instructions in "Verifying network connections."
Configure HTTP service. | If you purchased a license for the HTTP protocol for your filer, configure the HTTP options as described in Chapter 3, "Configuring HTTP on the Filer,."
Set up password and group files. | If you purchased a license for the CIFS protocol for your filer and you are not using a Windows NT domain controller to authenticate users, configure password and group files according to the instructions in Chapter 4, "Setting Up Password and Group Files,."
Configure CIFS shares. | If you purchased a license for the CIFS protocol for your filer, configure CIFS shares so that users can access directories on the filer.
Configure clients to access the filer. | You must configure clients according to the instructions in Chapter 6, "Configuring Clients to Access the Filer," so that they can access information on the filer.
Install the SecureShareTM program on CIFS clients. | If you purchased a license for the CIFS protocol for your filer, you can install the SecureShare program on Windows client machines according to the instructions in Chapter 7, "Installing SecureShare,." This enables users to view and modify the UNIX permissions and attributes on files stored on the filer.
Check the configuration of clustered filers. | If you configured clustered filers, check the cluster configuration information according to the instructions in Chapter 8, "Cluster Configuration Check,."
Learn about the Data ONTAP software. | Read Chapter 9, "About the Filer Software,."
Learn about FilerView | Read Chapter 10, "Using FilerView," to learn how to administer your filer using the FilerView Web-based administration tool.
