Chapter 17
Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP)
Introduction to NDMP
Advantages of NDMP
You can use third-party backup management programs that support NDMP Version 1, 2, or 3 to back up or restore the filer. Using NDMP-compliant programs offers these advantages over using the filer's dump and restore commands:
- You can execute more parallel backup and recovery operations. The filer supports up to 100 NDMP sessions.
- You can choose a backup program that best meets your administrative needs. For example, you can use an NDMP-compliant backup program that provides a graphical user interface for scheduling backups.
- NDMP-compliant programs can back up the filer to remote tape drives faster than the filer dump command.
- NDMP-compliant programs can back up the filer to tape libraries.
- It is easier to use NDMP to manage tape devices than to use the filer dump and restore commands.
Scope of this chapter
This chapter describes how to configure the NDMP server on the filer so that a computer can run an NDMP-compliant application to back up the filer or to restore data to the filer.
