Tape devices that can be used by the filer's NDMP server
Tape devices
The filer can read from or write to these devices when using NDMP:
- Tape drives or libraries attached to the filer
- Tape drives or libraries attached to the workstation that runs the backup management program
- Tape drives or libraries attached to a workstation or filer on your network
Restrictions for tape libraries
The following restrictions apply when you use NDMP for backing up the filer:
- You can attach up to 10 tape libraries to the filer to be backed up by NDMP.
- If you want to use NDMP to manage your tape library, you must set the tape stacker's autoload setting to Off. If the autoload setting is On, the filer uses the tape stacker in the same way as it uses a tape drive.
Naming convention for tape libraries
When you use NDMP to back up the filer to attached tape libraries, use the following names for the tape libraries:
In the actual name, n is a number (for example, /dev/mc0 or /dev/spt0). To verify the name for an attached tape library, use the sysconfig -m command.
Typical application of NDMP
The following figure illustrates how you can back up the filer to various devices using NDMP.
