Creating second-level virtual interfaces in a cluster

Description

You use this procedure to create a second-level virtual interface in a cluster. You follow this procedure when you have available two switches configured for multiple-port connections and eight or more interfaces. After you complete this procedure, connectivity for both filers is maintained even if one switch fails.

Steps

To create a second-level virtual interface in a cluster, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1 Enter the following commands to create two multiple-mode interfaces on one filer:
vif create multi trunk1 if1 if2
vif create multi trunk2 if3 if4
trunk1 and trunk2 are the names of the trunks. if1, if2, if3, and if4 are interfaces.
2 Enter the following command on the same filer as in Step 1 to create a single-mode interface from the multiple-mode interfaces:
vif create single secondlev1 trunk1 trunk2
secondlev1 is the name of a second-level virtual interfacer trunk1 and trunk2 are the names of the trunks.
3 Enter the following commands on the other filer to create two multiple-mode interfaces:
vif create multi trunk3 if5 if6
vif create multi trunk4 if7 if8
trunk3 and trunk4 are the names of the trunks. if5, if6, if7, and if8 are interfaces.
4 Enter the following command on the same filer as in Step 3 to create a single-mode interface from the multiple-mode interfaces:
vif create single secondlev2 trunk3 trunk4
secondlev2 is the name of a second-level virtual interface. trunk3 and trunk 4 are the names of the trunks.
5 Enter the following commands to configure the second-level virtual interfaces for takeover:
ifconfig secondlev1 partner secondlev2
ifconfig secondlev2 partner secondlev1
secondlev1 and secondlev2 are the names of second-level virtual interfaces.

Example

The following commands create the second-level virtual interface in the cluster shown in "Normal cluster operation with second-level virtual interfaces."

vif create multi Firstlev1 e1 e2
vif create multi Firstlev2 e3 e4
vif create single Secondlev1 Firstlev1 Firstlev2
vif create multi Firstlev3 e5 e6
vif create multi Firstlev4 e7 e8
vif create single Secondlev2 Firstlev3 Firstlev4
ifconfig Secondlev1 partner Secondlev2
ifconfig Secondlev2 partner Secondlev1
