Connecting a DS14 to storage appliance

Put on the antistatic wrist strap and grounding leash.

Make sure that the storage appliance and the disk shelf are turned off.

If...

Then...

Your storage appliance has an FC-AL adapter with a single copper interface

Connect the cable to the FC-AL adapter on the storage appliance.

Your single filer runs Data ONTAP 6.1 or later and has two FC-AL adapters with single copper interfaces

Connect the cable to one of the FC-AL adapters on the filer.

Your storage appliance has a dual optical interface

Connect one end of the dual-headed cable into Port A (Port 1) of the adapter on the storage appliance.

If the LRC A input...

Then...

Has a copper interface

1. Connect the DB-9 end of the cable to the LRC A Input on disk shelf 1.
2. Tighten the locking screws on the DB-9 connector with a screwdriver.

Has a dual optical interface

Connect the other end of the dual-headed cable to the LRC A Input on disk shelf 1

The following illustration shows a DS14 connected to a storage appliance using a dual optical interface.

Set the terminate switch on Channel A to the On position (down).

The following illustration shows the terminate switch set to the On position on LRC A.

If...

Then...

Your storage appliance has an FC-AL adapter with a single copper interface

Go to Step 7.

Your single filer runs Data ONTAP 6.1 or later and has two FC-AL adapters with single copper interfaces

Connect the cable to the second FC-AL adapter on the filer.

Your storage appliance has a dual optical interface

Connect one end of the dual-headed cable into Port B (Port 2) of the adapter on the storage appliance.

If the LRC B input...

Then...

Is a copper interface on a DS14 and is not part of a clustered filer system

Place a terminator on the Fibre Channel input of Channel B.

Has a copper interface and your single filer runs Data ONTAP 6.1 or later and has two FC-AL adapters with single copper interfaces

1. Connect the DB-9 end of the cable to the LRC B Input on disk shelf 1.
2. Tighten the locking screws on the DB-9 connector with a screwdriver.

Has a copper interface and is part of a clustered filer system

Has an optical interface

Connect the other end of the dual-headed cable to the LRC B Input on disk shelf 1.

If the disk shelf...

Then...

Is the only disk shelf in the loop connected to the storage appliance

1. Set the terminate switch on Channel B to the On position (up).

   Note
   The On position of LRC B is the inverse of LRC A.

2. Connect the disk shelf to a power source. See Connecting the disk shelf to a power source.

Is the first disk shelf in a loop of DS14 disk shelves

Connect the disk shelf to the remaining disk shelves. See Connecting multiple DS14 disk shelves.
