Updating your system

Updating your hardware

Hardware slot assignments  Top

When upgrading your hardware, you might need to add the following to your filers and disk shelves:

You might have to move or remove other adapters when adding the appropriate FC-AL adapters. You should have a minimum of one FC-AL adapter for your Channel A loops. See the F700 Series Field Service Guide for information about slot assignments.

The following diagram illustrates the possible location for cards in your filers. For current information about slot assignments for your filers, see NOW at http://now.netapp.com.

You need Data ONTAP 5.3 software or later if you want to install a tape adapter or use four GbE adapters in expansion slot 5.

Installing additional hardware in your filers and disk shelves  Top

To install the hardware you need for clustering, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

If your filers are running, shut down the filers from the console, using the halt command:

halt
2

Ground yourself to the filer chassis using the antistatic grounding strap, then turn off the power to the filers and disk shelves.

3

Install and label additional FC-AL cards, as described in the F700 Series Field Service Guide. Make sure that you label the FC-AL cards appropriately.

Note
Each FC-AL interface on your filers can connect to a maximum of eight daisy-chained disk shelves. The distribution of the storage capacity for a filer with two or more FC-AL interfaces is left to your discretion.

See Appendix A, Cluster Configuration Examples, for examples of labeling the FC-AL interfaces.

4

Install the cluster interconnect adapters as described in the F700 Series Field Service Guide.

5

Install any LRC cards as needed, as described in the appropriate fibre channel disk shelf guide.

If you have a Fibre Channel StorageShelf FC7, you might have to label your LRC cards as well:

  • Label the LRC card above the EDM card as Channel A.
  • Label the LRC card below the EDM card as Channel B.
6

Repeat Steps 1 through 5 on the partner filer.

7

Go to Cabling your system into a cluster.
