Hardware and software updates

Updating your hardware

About updating your hardware  Top

When updating your hardware, you might need to add the following to your nodes and disk shelves:

You might have to move or remove other adapters when adding the appropriate FC-AL adapters. See the F800 Series Field Service Guide for information about installing additional FC-AL adapters.

Before installing additional hardware into your nodes or disk shelves, check the NOW Web page at http://now.netapp.com for current configuration information.

Mixed disk shelf environment requirements  Top

When converting your filers into a cluster, you can add new disk shelves to your existing disk shelf loops. In certain instances, you add newer disk shelf types to older disk shelf types.

To successfully add newer disk shelves to older, existing disk shelves, you must be aware of the following requirements:

Installing additional hardware  Top

To install the hardware you need for clustering, complete the following steps.

Note
You should run diagnostics for any new components you add to your cluster. See the Diagnostics Guide for more information.

Step

Action

1

Shut down the filers by entering the following command:

halt
2

Ground yourself using the antistatic grounding strap, then turn off the power to the filers and disk shelves and unplug them.

3

Install and label additional FC-AL adapters or dual Fibre Channel adapters, as described in the F800 Series Field Service Guide. Make sure to label the FC-AL adapters appropriately.

Note
Each FC-AL or dual Fibre Channel adapter can connect to a maximum of eight (four for DS14 disk shelves) daisy-chained disk shelves, or up to 56 disk drives in the loop.

4

Install the cluster interconnect adapter or VI cluster adapter, as described in the F800 Series Field Service Guide.

Install any LRCs, as needed. If you have an FC7, you might have to label your LRCs. If the LRCs are not labeled, label them as follows:

  • Label the LRC above the EDM card as Channel A.
  • Label the LRC below the EDM card as Channel B.
6

Repeat Steps 3 through 5 on the partner node.
