About this guide

This guide describes the field service procedures for replacing, upgrading, and maintaining hardware units in the NetApp® F800 series filers.

Use this guide after you familiarize yourself with the system hardware by reading the guides in the following table.

This guide does not provide information about disk shelves. For disk shelf information, see the hardware guide for the disk shelf that is part of your system.

Audience

This guide is for qualified system administrators and service personnel who are familiar with Network Appliance^TM filers and have the following skills and experience:

Working familiarity with small computer system hardware and operation
Basic understanding of common networking concepts and practices
Working familiarity with accepted tools and procedures for installing and operating sensitive electronic equipment

Terminology

In this guide,

Filer refers to an F810, F820, F840, F825, or F880 filer.
Disk shelf refers to any Network Appliance Fibre Channel disk shelf.
Expansion adapters used in F800 series filers refers to the following:
- NVRAM III adapter
- Cluster interconnect adapter or VI cluster adapter
- FC-AL adapter or dual-port Fibre Channel adapter
- SCSI tape adapter
- Network interface cards (NICs)
- DAFs network adapter

CompactFlash unit refers to the CompactFlash^TM card and adapter that together plug into the F825 and F880 CompactFlash reader as the primary boot device.
