Displaying tape device and tape drive information

About displaying tape device information  Top

Before you back up to a tape device attached to the filer, you might want to verify that the filer detects the tape drive associated with the device and verify the available tape device names associated with the tape drive.

Qualified versus nonqualified tape drives  Top

Qualified tape drives are tape drives that Network Appliance has tested and found to work properly with filers. A list of qualified tape drives is available on the NOW site at

http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/olio/cert_matrices/

Nonqualified tape drives are not supported by Network Appliance. You can use a nonqualified tape drive by qualifying the tape drive dynamically, as described in Qualifying tape drives dynamically, or by making it emulate a qualified tape drive, as described in Using nonqualified tape drives.

Information about qualified tape drives in tape libraries  Top

Qualified tape drives that are in tape stackers or libraries are listed by drive. For example, a Breece-Hill library is not listed in all displays, whereas the DLT7000 tape drives that it contains are listed.

Displaying information about tape drives  Top

To display information about all tape drives on a filer, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

sysconfig -t
Result

A display like the following appears. The numbers following "Tape drive" show the slot on the filer that the drive is attached to, followed by the drive's SCSI ID. In the following example, the Exabyte 8900 has SCSI ID 1 and is attached to a controller in slot 0b. Information about the Digital DLT7000 includes bpi specifications provided by the manufacturer.

Note
Compression capacity in the display is estimated; actual capacity depends on how much the data being written to the tape can be compressed.

Displaying information about tape medium changers  Top

To display information about tape medium changers, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

sysconfig -m
Result

A display like the following appears. In this example, a tape stacker with SCSI ID 4 is attached to slot 6 of the filer.

Medium changer (6.4) BHTi Quad 7
mc0 - medium changer device

Note
If autoload on the medium changer is set to On, the medium changer information might not appear.

Note
The filer supports only tape medium changers that are compliant with SCSI-2 specifications.

Displaying information about tape drive connections to the filer  Top

To display information about tape drive connections to the filer, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

sysconfig -v
2

Look for the information about the SCSI adapter to which the tape devices are attached.

Example

This example shows a tape medium changer with SCSI ID 6 and a tape drive with SCSI ID 4 attached to slot 6 of the filer. The SCSI firmware is 2.26, and the SCSI adapter clock rate is 60 MHz. For each drive, the following information appears:

slot 6: SCSI Host Adapter 6 (QLogic ISP 1040B)
Firmware Version 2.26      Clock Rate 60MHz.
   6: BHTi Quad 7          1.41
   4: QUANTUM DLT7000         1B41
