Controlling the speed of RAID operations

RAID operations you can control  Top

You can control the speed of the following RAID operations:

Effects of varying the speed on filer performance  Top

The speed that you select can affect the overall performance of the filer. You can vary the speed of an operation from a speed that minimally slows filer network operations to a speed that can severely slow filer network operations.

Before changing the speed of a RAID operation, you might want to determine the CPU load to see what effect the change might have on network performance.

Determining CPU load  Top

To determine the CPU load on the filer when RAID operations are in progress, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

sysstat
Result

System activity statistics are displayed every 15 seconds.

2

If...

Then...

The number under CPU is lower than 70 percent

Consider increasing the RAID operation speed to hasten reconstruction.

The number under CPU is 70 percent or higher

Consider decreasing the RAID operation speed to free CPU resources and possibly improve network performance.
