Checksum upgrade status

The checksum upgrade process  Top

The checksum upgrade process is a long process that occurs when you upgrade Data ONTAP on your filer. The following is a brief description of how Data ONTAP upgrades the checksum.

Stage

Description

1

WAFL upgrade--Data ONTAP moves allocated blocks that are in the checksum space out of the checksum space.

After Data ONTAP moves all the blocks in the active file system out of the checksum space, Data ONTAP waits for all snapshots created before the upgrade to be deleted. Automatically scheduled snapshots are deleted automatically after a period of time. You must delete user-created snapshots manually.

2

RAID upgrade, first phase--Data ONTAP initializes all checksum blocks to a known state.

3

RAID upgrade, second phase--Data ONTAP seeds the checksum blocks with the correct checksums of the corresponding data blocks. This phase occurs during the first disk scrub after Data ONTAP initializes all checksum blocks (first phase).

Examples of checksum detailed displays  Top

The vol status -c command provides details about a block checksum upgrade.

The following example shows checksum status during the WAFL upgrade phase:

vol status -c
Volume  Checksum status
  vol0  Checksums initializing:
            WAFL upgrade in progress

The following example shows snapshots that must be deleted before the WAFL upgrade can finish:

vol status -c
Volume  Checksum status
  vol0  Checksums initializing:
WAFL upgrade will complete when the following
            snapshots are deleted:
                date             name
                ------------     ------------
                Jan 21 18:00     snap.0
                Sep 23 10:04     snap.2

The following example shows checksum status during RAID upgrade, phase one:

vol status -c
Volume  Checksum status
  vol0  Checksums initializing:
RAID upgrade phase 1 (of 2) in
            progress (25% complete).

The following example shows checksum status during RAID upgrade, phase two:

vol status -c
Volume  Checksum status
  vol0  Checksums initializing:
RAID upgrade phase 2 (of 2) will be performed
            during next disk scrub.

The following example shows a completed checksum upgrade:

vol status -c
Volume  Checksum status
  vol0  Checksums active:
