Using volume copy

Using volume copy  Top

You can use the volume copy command to copy LUNs in a SAN environment.

The vol copy start command enables you to copy data from one WAFL volume to another, either within the same filer or to a different filer. The result of the vol copy command is a restricted volume containing the same data as is on the source filer at the time you initiated the copy operation.

For more information about using the vol copy command, see the chapter about volume copy in the Data ONTAP 6.4 Data Protection Guide.

To copy a WAFL volume containing a LUN to the same or different filer, complete the following step.

Caution
You must save contents of host file system buffers to disk before running vol copy commands on the filer.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

vol copy start -S source:source_volume dest:dest_volume

Note
If the copying takes place between two filers, you can enter the vol copy start command on either the source or destination filer. You cannot, however, enter the command on a third filer that does not contain the source or destination volume.

Example

vol copy start -S /vol/vol0 filerB:/vol/vol1

Note
Because the vol copy command takes snapshots, remember that in Data ONTAP 6.3 and later, WAFL volumes can be space reserved, which means that if free space within the WAFL volume is below a certain threshold, snapshots cannot be taken.
