Creating diskettes from the CD-ROM

About creating diskettes from the CD-ROM  Top

You can create diskettes from either a UNIX client or a Windows client. From a Windows client, you use different procedures to create boot diskettes and a firmware diskette.

Creating boot or firmware diskettes from a UNIX client  Top

From a UNIX client, to create boot or firmware diskettes from a file on the Data ONTAP CD-ROM, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Mount the Data ONTAP CD-ROM on your client.

2

Use the /files.htm file to locate the desired firmware or system boot software files.

3

Copy each desired firmware or boot file to a diskette using the following command:

dd if=file of=drivedev bs=512

file is the name of the file.

drivedev is the device name of the diskette drive.

Result

A message listing file counts similar to the following appears, confirming that the diskette is written.

2880+0 records in
2880+0 records out
4

Remove, write-protect, and label each diskette after creating it. Include the firmware revision or Data ONTAP release number, diskette number, and filer model.

Example

Release 6.4, Disk 1 of 7, NetApp F840

Note
It is important to record the filer model on the diskette label, especially if you have different models on site. Filers in different NetApp filer series use different files.
