Upgrading disk firmware

About disk firmware upgrades  Top

When you add new disks or a disk shelf, you might need to verify the compatibility of the disk firmware versions on the filer disks. In most cases, if they are compatible, Data ONTAP upgrades the disk firmware automatically. However, for some disks, you might receive error messages about the firmware compatibility. If this happens, you must manually upgrade the disk firmware.

Command for upgrading disk firmware  Top

You use the disk_fw_update command from the filer console on a running system to update out-of-date firmware on all disks or a specified disk on a filer. Each filer is shipped with a /etc/disk_fw directory that contains the latest firmware revisions. The disk firmware is part of the Data ONTAP software.

The disk_fw_update command is applicable to both SCSI disks and Fibre Channel disks.

Note
This command makes disks inaccessible for up to two minutes, so network sessions using the filer should be terminated before running the command. This is particularly true for CIFS sessions, which typically are terminated while this command executes.
