Understanding the /etc/quotas file

Format of the /etc/quotas file  Top

The format of the /etc/quotas file for a vfiler is the same format as for a filer. All path names in the file are complete path names.

Where user and group quotas take effect  Top

For each user or group quota, you can specify in the Type field the qtree or volume in which the quota takes effect. You can specify only qtrees and volumes that are owned by the vfiler.

If you omit the path name in the Type field, the quota takes effect in the filer's root volume when quotas are turned on for the root volume.

Recommendation

A vfiler administrator should specify a path name in the Type field even though the quota is for a user or group in the filer's root volume. This ensures that the quota remains applicable even after you change the root volume to a different volume.
