Hot-upgrading or hot-downgrading a disk shelf

When you can hot-upgrade or hot- downgrade  Top

You can hot-upgrade a disk shelf with an LRC into a disk shelf with an ESH or hot-downgrade the disk shelf with an ESH into a disk shelf with an LRC, if your filer system incorporates redundancy through multipathing.

Requirements for hot-upgrading or hot-downgrading  Top

To hot-upgrade a disk shelf with an LRC into a disk shelf with an ESH or hot-downgrade the disk shelf with an ESH into a disk shelf with an LRC, the following requirements must be met.

Caution
You must hot-upgrade or hot-downgrade all disk shelves in the loop.

Disk shelf loop speed

Hot-upgrade

Hot-downgrade

DS14 (only available at 1-Gb loop speed)

LRC to ESH hot- upgrade is supported.

ESH to LRC hot-downgrade is supported.

DS14mk2 FC set at 1-Gb loop speed

LRC to ESH hot- upgrade is supported.

ESH to LRC hot-downgrade is supported.

DS14mk2 FC set at 2-Gb loop speed

Not applicable.

ESH to LRC hot-downgrade is not supported.

Hot-upgrading or hot-downgrading a disk shelf  Top

To hot-upgrade or hot-downgrade a disk shelf, complete the following steps.

Caution
To hot-upgrade or hot-downgrade a disk shelf that is in a cluster, see the Cluster Guide for your filer.

Step

Action

1

Put on the antistatic wrist strap and grounding leash.

2

From the console of the filer, enter the following command to disable all the LRCs or ESHs in Loop A:

storage disable adapter adaptername
3

If you are...

Then...

Hot-upgrading the disk shelf

Note the position of the termination switch on the LRC you are removing and set the termination switch on the ESH to the same setting before inserting it into the disk shelf.

Hot-downgrading the disk shelf

Note the position of the termination switch on the ESH you are removing and set the termination switch on the LRC to the same setting before inserting it into the disk shelf.

4

Disconnect the LRC/ESH from the Fibre Channel cabling and remove the cabling.

5

Using the thumb and index finger of both hands, press the levers on the CAM mechanism on the LRC/ESH to release it and pull it out of the disk shelf.

6

If you are...

Then...

Hot-upgrading the disk shelf

Slide the ESH into the slot at the rear of the disk shelf and push the levers of the CAM mechanism into place.

Caution
Do not use excessive force when sliding the ESH into the disk shelf; you might damage the connector.

Hot-downgrading the disk shelf

Slide the LRC into the slot at the rear of the disk shelf and push the levers of the CAM mechanism into place.

Caution
Do not use excessive force when sliding the LRC into the disk shelf; you might damage the connector.

7

If you are...

Then...

Hot-upgrading a disk shelf

Reconnect the Fibre Channel cabling by using LC to LC cables when connecting to optical FC-AL adapters and HSSDC2 to HSSDC2 cables for connections between shelves.

Hot-downgrading a disk shelf

Reconnect the Fibre Channel cabling by using HSSDC to DB-9 cables when connecting to copper FC-AL adapters or SC to LC cables when connecting to optical FC-AL adapters, and DB-9 to DB-9 cables for connections between shelves.

8

Repeat Step 2 through Step 7 for the remaining LRCs/ESHs in the loop.

9

From the console of the filer, enter the following command to verify that the LRCs/ESHs in Loop A report good status:

environ shelf

As long as only the LRCs A are upgraded, you also receive the following error message:

Element 1: component is from a different product family.
This is an unsupported configuration.

Note
Both modules in the disk shelf must either be LRCs or ESHs. A mixed module configuration is supported during the hot-swap procedure, but it is not a supported configuration for long-term operation.

10

From the console of the filer, enter the following command to enable the Loop A:

storage enable adapter adaptername
11

Repeat Step 1 through Step 10 for Loop B.
