Not enough storage

What to do when storage is full  Top

You can add a DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelf to a cluster that is made up of DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves without powering down your cluster. This enables you to add disk shelves without a service interruption. However, you cannot add more disk shelves to your cluster than your cluster can support. See the NOW Web page at http://now.netapp.com for the amount of storage your cluster can support.

Caution
Hot-adding a disk shelf is different from hot-swapping a disk shelf. Hot-swapping a disk shelf, which means removing an existing disk shelf and installing a new one in its place, is not supported. Your system supports hot-adding of disk shelves only.

Considerations for adding storage to a cluster  Top

The following table lists some of the restrictions for adding disk shelves to your cluster. See the DiskShelf14 and DiskShelf14mk2 FC Hardware Guide for a more detailed discussion of restrictions.

If your cluster has...

And you are...

Then...

FC9 disk shelves

adding DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves with LRCs

The DS14/DS14mk2 FC must be the last disk shelf in the loop.

DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves with ESH modules

Hot-adding a disk shelf

  • Disks should be pre-zeroed and used as spares.
  • You can only hot-add a DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelf to an existing DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelf.
  • The DS14/DS14mk2 FC must be the last disk shelf.
  • DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves with ESH modules can only be added to disk shelf loops with ESH modules.
  • If the new disk shelf is a DS14mk2 FC, the loop speed switch must be set for the appropriate installation.

Note
See the System Configuration guide on the NOW Web page at http://now.netapp.com for additional restrictions.

Adding storage to a cluster  Top

To add storage to a cluster, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Determine whether shelf counting is enabled by entering the following command:

cf nfo status
2

If disk shelf counting is...

Then...

Enabled

  1. Disable negotiated failover in your cluster by entering the following command from the node console:

    cf nfo disable disk_shelf

  2. Go to Step 3.

Not enabled

Go to Step 3.

3

Install the new disk shelf in your equipment rack, as described in the DiskShelf14 and DiskShelf14mk2 FC Hardware Guide.

4

Ground the new disk shelf, then give the disk shelf a unique shelf ID.

5

Verify that the new disk shelf ID is unique by entering the following command:

fcstat device_map

Result

Shelf IDs for all Fibre Channel devices are listed.

6

If disk shelves in the loop to which you are adding the new disk shelf have...

Then, for loops with...

LRCs

  • DS14 only: Go to Step 6.
  • A mix of DS14 and DS14mk2 FC: Set the loop speed to 1 Gb.

    Caution
An incorrectly set loop speed results in an open loop condition.

ESHs

  • DS14 only or a mix of DS14 and DS14mk2 FC: Set the loop speed to 1 Gb.
  • DS14mk2 FC only that are running at 1 Gb: Set the loop speed to 1 Gb.
  • DS14mk2 FC only that are running at 2 Gb: Set the loop speed to 2 Gb.

    Caution
An incorrectly set loop speed causes the storage appliance to panic.

7

Plug in the new disk shelf and turn it on.

8

Cable the last disk shelf Channel A LRC/ESH Output port to the new disk shelf Channel A LRC/ESH Input port. Label the cable with a solid-colored label.

9

Cable the last disk shelf Channel B LRC/ESH Output port to the new disk shelf Channel B LRC/ESH Input port. Label this cable with a striped label.

10

Set both terminate switches on the new disk shelf to On.

11

Set both terminate switches on the previous disk shelf to Off.

12

If disk shelf counting was...

Then...

Enabled

  1. Reenable negotiated failover in your cluster by entering the following command from the node console:

    cf nfo enable disk_shelf

  2. Use the cluster.

Not enabled

Use the cluster.
