Starting and stopping the DAFS service
When to stop and start the DAFS service
The dafs setup command starts the DAFS service. During regular operations, you may temporarily want to stop the DAFS service for
- Filer maintenance, for example, rearranging filer disks
- VI NIC maintenance
- Using the dafs setup command to reconfigure DAFS properties
For filer maintenance, it is important to stop the DAFS service (with the dafs stop command) and disable any other currently running protocols, for example, CIFS or NFS. After performing the maintenance, you can run dafs start to enable the DAFS protocol and enable any other desired protocols. When you start the DAFS service, DAFS VI NICs are automatically reattached.
You can also enable the DAFS service to run persistently (for example, to always start at boot time), or you can disable the DAFS service from running. To perform these operations, you use the options dafs.enable command.
About starting and stopping the DAFS service
To temporarily start and stop the DAFS service during filer operation, you use the dafs start and dafs stop commands. The command syntax and functions are as follows:
- The dafs start command starts the DAFS service if it is not already running and attaches the DAFS service to any VI NICs that are configured for the DAFS service.
- The dafs stop command stops the DAFS service if it is running. Prior to stopping the DAFS service, this command stops any DAFS sessions on DAFS-attached VI NICs. You must stop the DAFS service (if it is running) before running the dafs setup command.
For more information, see the Data ONTAP command reference for dafs.
Starting the DAFS service
To start the DAFS service, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
At the filer command line, enter the following command:
dafs start
Result
The DAFS service is started and any VI NICs that are configured to work with DAFS are attached.
Example:
filer> dafs start
Thu Aug 30 15:26:57 GMT [dafs.server.startOk:info]: DAFS
service started
Thu Aug 30 15:26:57 GMT [dafs.server.attachNic:info]:
DAFS service attaching e4
Thu Aug 30 15:26:58 GMT [dafs.server.attachNic:info]:
DAFS service attaching e5
In this example, the DAFS service was started and the VI NICs e4 and e5 were attached to the DAFS service.

Stopping the DAFS service
To stop the DAFS service, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
At the filer command line, enter the following command:
dafs stop
Result
The DAFS service is stopped, including any DAFS sessions on DAFS-attached VI NICs.
Example:
filer> dafs stop
Thu Aug 30 15:27:21 GMT [dafs.server.shutdown:info]:
DAFS service shutdown
In this example, the DAFS service was stopped, but will start if the the dafs start command is issued, or if the filer is rebooted.

About persistently enabling and disabling the DAFS service
To persistently enable or disable the DAFS service, you can use the options dafs.enable command. The command syntax and functions are as follows:
- The options dafs.enable on command starts the DAFS service if it is not already running and additionally attaches the DAFS service to any VI NICs that are configured for the DAFS service. The DAFS service is enabled to run persistently. It automatically starts each time the filer is rebooted.
- The options dafs.enable off command stops the DAFS service if it is running. Prior to stopping the DAFS service, this command stops any DAFS sessions on DAFS-attached VI NICs. The DAFS service is disabled persistently. It does not start after rebooting the filer system.
For more information, see the na_options(1) man page.
Persistently enabling the DAFS service
To persistently enable the DAFS service, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
At the filer command line, enter the following command:
options dafs.enable on
Result
The DAFS service is started and any VI NICs that are configured to work with DAFS are attached.
Example:
filer> options dafs.enable on
Thu Aug 30 15:28:53 GMT [dafs.server.startOk:info]: DAFS
service started
Thu Aug 30 15:28:53 GMT [dafs.server.attachNic:info]:
DAFS service attaching e4
Thu Aug 30 15:28:54 GMT [dafs.server.attachNic:info]:
DAFS service attaching e5
filer>
In this example, the DAFS service was started and the VI NICs e4 and e5 were attached to the DAFS service.
|
Persistently disabling the DAFS service
To persistently disable the DAFS service, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
At the filer command line, enter the following command:
options dafs.enable off
Result
The DAFS service is stopped, including any DAFS sessions on DAFS-attached VI NICs.
Example:
filer> options dafs.enable off
Thu Aug 30 15:28:50 GMT [dafs.server.shutdown:info]:
DAFS service shutdown
In this example, the DAFS service was stopped, and will not restart if the filer is rebooted. The service can be restarted with the options dafs.enable on command or the dafs start command.
