Understanding data management

Data access management with volumes and qtrees  Top

You manage data access by using both volumes (physical file systems) and qtrees (logical file systems within a volume) to segregate files that use UNIX security from files that use Windows NT security. You can also enable access to both kinds of files from both UNIX and Windows NT, depending on the needs of your users.

Data storage management  Top

You manage data storage by managing volumes. You can have more than one volume. You can create additional volumes to ensure data integrity and to manage backups and restores. You can also create additional volumes to accommodate your users if they use more than one language. For example, you can have one volume for files in French and another for files in German.

Data resource management with quotas  Top

You can use quotas to limit the number of files and the data space available to users. Using quotas is described in Chapter 8, Disk Space Management Using Quotas.
