Changing the state of a volume
Volume states
A volume can be in one of the following three states:
- Offline--Read or write access is not allowed.
- Restricted--Some operations, such as copying volumes and parity reconstruction, are allowed, but data access is not allowed.
- Online--Read and write access is allowed. An online volume can be further described as follows:
- Normal--The volume is unmirrored and all of its RAID groups are functional.
- Mirrored--The volume is mirrored and all of its RAID groups are functional.
- Degraded--The volume contains at least one degraded RAID group that is not being reconstructed after single disk failure.
- Double degraded--The volume contains at least one RAID group with double disk failure that is not being reconstructed (this state is possible if RAID DP protection is enabled for the affected volume).
- Mirror degraded--The volume is a mirrored volume and one of its plexes is offline or resynchronizing.
- Foreign--Disks that the volume contains were moved to the current filer from another filer.
- Reconstruction xx% complete--At least one RAID group in the volume is being reconstructed after experiencing single disk failure.
- Double reconstruction xx% complete--At least one RAID group in the volume is being reconstructed after experiencing double disk failure (this state is possible if RAID DP protection is enabled for the affected volume).
- Partial--At least one disk was found for the volume, but two or more disks are missing.
- Growing--Disks are in the process of being added to the volume.
- Initializing--The volume is in the process of being initialized.
- Needs check--WAFL consistency check needs to be performed on the volume.
- Resyncing--The volume contains two plexes; one plex is resynchronizing with the volume.
- Ironing--A WAFL consistency check is being performed on the volume.
- Copying--The volume is currently the target volume of active vol copy or snapmirror command operations.
- Snapmirrored--The volume is a snapmirrored replica of another volume.
- Verifying--Mirror verification operation is currently running on the volume.
- Wafl inconsistent--The volume has been marked corrupted; contact Network Appliance Technical Support.
- Invalid--The volume does not contain a valid file system.
Determining the state of volumes
To determine what state a volume is in, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
Enter the following command:
vol status
|
When to take a volume offline
You can take a volume offline and make it unavailable to the filer. You do this for the following reasons:
- To perform maintenance on the volume
- To move a volume to another filer
- To destroy a volume
Taking a volume offline
To take a volume offline, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
Enter the following command:
vol offline vol-name
vol-name is the name of the volume to be taken offline.
|
When to make a volume restricted
When you make a volume restricted, it is available for only a few operations. You do this for the following reasons:
- To copy a volume to another volume (see the Data Protection Guide for volume copy details)
- To perform a level-0 SnapMirror operation (see the Data Protection Guide for SnapMirror operation details)
Restricting a volume
To restrict a volume, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
Enter the following command:
vol restrict vol-name
vol-name is the name of the volume to be made restricted.
|
Bringing a volume online
You bring a volume online to make it available to the filer after you deactivated that volume. To bring a volume back online, complete the following step.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
Enter the following command:
vol online vol-name
vol-name is the name of the volume to reactivate. If the volume is inconsistent, the command prompts you for confirmation.
Note If you bring an inconsistent volume online, it might suffer further file system corruption. |
