The Network Appliance FAS270 and FAS270c appliances consist of a single disk shelf of 14 disks and either one internal filer head (on the FAS270) or two clustered internal filer heads (on the FAS270c). By design, a disk located on this common disk shelf can, if the appliance has two filer heads, be assigned to the ownership of either one of the two filer heads. The ownership of each disk is ascertained by an ownership record written on each disk.
Network Appliance delivers the FAS270 and FAS270c appliances with each disk preassigned to the one FAS270 internal filer head or preassigned to either one of the two FAS270c filer heads.
However, if you add one or more disk shelves to an existing FAS270 or FAS270c appliance, you might have to assign ownership to the disks contained on those shelves.
You can use the disk show command and the disk assign command to display, assign, and modify disk ownership on the FAS270 and the FAS270c.
Note
The disk show command and the disk assign command are valid only on the FAS270 and FAS270c appliances.
Use the disk show command plus options to view the ownership of disks on the FAS270 or the FAS270c.
| 1 | From the console of one of the FAS270 or FAS270c filer heads, enter the following command to display a listing of all disks on the FAS270 or the FAS270c and their owners. fh1>disk show -v |
The following sample output of the disk show -v command on an FAS270c shows disks 0b.16 through 0b.29 assigned in odd/even fashion to the internal cluster nodes fh1and fh2. The 14 disks on the add-on disk shelf are still unassigned to either filer head.
fh1>disk show -v

The additional disk show options are listed below.
disk show [-o hostname | -s nvram_id] |
Shows all disks owned by a specified host or its NVRAM ID (the NVRAM number shipped with the filer head) |
|
Shows all the disks that do not have an owner |
|
To assign disks that are currently labeled "not owned," complete the following steps.
After you have assigned disks to the one internal FAS270 filer head or to one of the two internal FAS270c filer heads, you can assign those disks to volumes on the filer that owns them or leave them as spare disks on the filer that owns them.
You can also use the disk assign command to modify the ownership of any disk assignment that you have made. This includes, on the FAS270c, reassigning a disk from one filer head to the other or, on either the FAS270 or FAS270c appliance, changing an assigned disk back to "not owned" status.
Caution
Network Appliance recommends that disk assignments be modified only for spare disks. Disks that have already been assigned to a volume cannot be reassigned without endangering all the data and the structure of that entire volume.
To modify disk ownership assignments on the FAS270 or the FAS270c, complete the following steps.
