Modifying the size of RAID groups

Maximum and default RAID group sizes  Top

You can change the size of RAID groups that will be created on a volume.

Maximum and default RAID group sizes vary according to the NetApp platform and type of RAID group protection provided. The default RAID group sizes are the sizes that NetApp generally recommends.

The following table lists the maximum RAID DP group sizes supported on Network Appliance platforms.

Note
If as a result of a software upgrade from an older version of Data ONTAP, volumes that contain RAID 4 groups larger than the maximum 28 disks exist, NetApp recommends that you convert the volumes in question to RAID DP as soon as possible.

Changing the size of the most recent and future RAID groups  Top

The volume option named raidsize is the maximum RAID group size that can be reached by adding disks to a volume.

To change the raidsize setting for an existing volume, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

vol options vol-name raidsize size

vol-name is the volume whose raidsize setting you are changing.

size is the number of disks you want in the most recently created and all future RAID groups in this volume.

Example

The following command changes the raidsize setting of the volume yervol to 16 disks:

vol options yervol raidsize 16

See Adding new disks to a RAID group and Forcibly adding disks to volumes for information about adding disks to RAID groups.

Verifying the raidsize setting  Top

To verify the size of raidsize setting in a volume, enter the vol options vol_name command.

Modifying the size of existing RAID groups  Top

You can use -g raidgroup option in the vol add command to increase the size of an existing RAID group. See Adding new disks to a RAID group and Forcibly adding disks to volumes for information about adding disks to existing RAID groups.
