Configuring an Open Systems platform

Installing Open Systems SnapVault agents from
CD-ROM  Top

If you have the Open Systems SnapVault Agent CD-ROM, install the Open Systems SnapVault agent on your Windows or UNIX primary storage system as follows.

Step

Action

1

Log in to your primary storage system with Administrator privileges (for Windows systems) or as root (for UNIX systems).

2

Insert the CD-ROM labeled Open Systems SnapVault Agent into the primary storage system's CD-ROM drive.

3

From the command line, navigate to the CD-ROM directory specific to your platform.

  • For Windows 2000, go to \WIN2K.
  • For Windows NT, go to \NT.
  • For Solaris, go to /SOLARIS.
  • For HP-UX, go to /HPUX.
  • For AIX, go to /AIX.
  • For Linux, go to /LINUX.

    Note
Depending on your system configuration and mount options, the files and directories mentioned may appear in lowercase. To navigate to the correct directory, use uppercase characters for the directory name (for example, cd WIN2K)

4

From the command line, invoke the SVINSTAL program. Enter the following command using all uppercase characters: SVINSTAL

Note
On a Windows system, enter the command using the command line or DOS prompt. You cannot install by double-clicking an icon or shortcut.

5

When the SVINSTAL program prompts for the Installation directory, press Enter to accept the default, or enter your own path and press Enter.

  • On a Windows system the default value, c:\Program Files, installs the Open Systems SnapVault software in c:\Program Files\snapvault.
  • On a UNIX system, the default value, /usr, installs the Open Systems SnapVault software in /usr/snapvault.
6

If you plan to manage SnapVault back up through...

Then...

Your Data ONTAP, Windows, or UNIX command line

Type nothing and simply press Enter.

A commercial NDMP application

When the SVINSTAL program prompts you for the user name, password, and NDMP listening port, specify a user and password authorized through that application.

7

When the SVINSTAL program prompts you for Allowed Systems, enter one or more host names or IP addresses of the SnapVault secondary storage system or systems that you will allow to back up this primary storage system.

Note
If you specify multiple SnapVault secondary storage systems, separate the host names or IP addresses with commas.

8

After you finish installing the Open Systems SnapVault agent, follow the procedures in Configuring the SnapVault secondary storage system to configure the SnapVault secondary storage system.

At the conclusion of a successful installation, the installation program displays a message similar to the following:

Installation completed successfully.
SnapVault errors/warnings are logged in `C:\Program Files\
snapvault\etc\snapvault'

The log file is created when the first SnapVault backup occurs, not by the install process. Therefore, if you search for the log file after completing the installation, but before you back up data for the first time, you will not find the log file.

Note
Install messages are output directly to the console and are not captured in any log file.

Installing Open Systems SnapVault agents from the NOW site  Top

If you do not have the Open Systems SnapVault Agent CD-ROM, you can download the software module you need. Install the Open Systems SnapVault agent on your supported Windows or UNIX platform as follows.

  • On Red Hat Linux primary storage systems--Uncompress and untar the downloaded ossv_linux_v1.1.tar.z package using the following commands:
    uncompress ossv_linux_v1.1.tar.z

    tar -xvf ossv_linux_v1.1.tar

4

From your system's command line, invoke the SVINSTAL program.

8

After you finish installing the Open Systems SnapVault agent, follow the procedures in Configuring the SnapVault secondary storage system to configure the SnapVault secondary storage system.

Post-installation check before backing up data  Top

To ensure that the installation completed correctly and that the primary and secondary storage systems are able to back up data, complete the following post-installation check:

Step

Action

1

From a system that has access to the system on which you installed Open System SnapVault, enter the following command:

telnet system_name 10566
2

If the system responds with...

Then...

Connected to
system_name

The installation was successful. Proceed to Step 3.

telnet: Unable
to connect to
remote host:
Connection
refused

The installation was not successful.

  1. Perform the confirming services procedure in Confirm services are running.
  2. Retry connecting using a telnet session.
  3. If still unable to connect, reinstall the Open Systems SnapVault agent.
3

Verify connectivity to the secondary storage system using the following command:

ping secondary_system

secondary_system is either the name or IP address of the secondary storage system.

4

If security was enabled during installation, ensure that the secondary storage system specified is accessible from the primary using the procedure described in Enable and disable security.

5

Ensure that the volumes you need have been created on the secondary storage system before you attempt to back up data to them.

Note
The volumes should not have qtrees already created.

6

If there are firewalls between the primary storage system and the secondary storage system, ensure that TCP port 10,000 and 10,566 are allowed using the Telnet command. TCP port 10,000 is used by the SnapVault process and TCP port 10,566 is used by NDMP applications.

Modifying installation settings  Top

If you need to modify any of the SVINSTAL settings that you made, invoke the svconfigurator utility on the system on which you installed the Open Systems SnapVault agent. To run svconfigurator, complete the following steps.
