Chapter 2
This chapter describes methods for using tape devices (software functionality designations), tape drives (the physical hardware modules that house and control the tapes), and tape aliases (methods of addressing tape drives). You need to manage tape drives when you back up data from the filer to tape or when you recover data from tape to the filer. In particular, you need to understand the relationship between tape devices and tape drives so you can specify devices in performing backups and restores. Tape aliases are names you assign to tape drives to make it easier to keep track of tape drives used for multiple filers.
In this and subsequent chapters, the term tape device means a specific functionality of a physical tape drive that you create by specifying information in the tape device name when you install a tape drive, which handles a single tape, or a tape stacker or tape library (medium changer), which handles multiple tapes.
