Upgrading from an F700 Series Filer

to an F810, F820, or F840 Filer

Required hardware and tools

The following list specifies the tools and equipment you need for the upgrade process:

  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Grounding strap
  • Diskettes for downloading Data ONTAPTM software

Recommended software, firmware, and manuals

The following list specifies the software, firmware, and manuals you need for the upgrade process:

  • Data ONTAP 6.1.2 software or later
Caution: There are two versions of Data ONTAP; one designed for the F700 series of filers and one designed for the F800 series of filers. Both filers must be running the same version of Data ONTAP, but each filer must be running the version designed specifically for that filer series.
  • Filer firmware 2.8_a2 or later for the F700 series
  • Filer firmware 3.1_i1 or later for the F800 series
  • Current disk shelf firmware bundled with Data ONTAP 6.1.2 or later
  • System Configuration Guide from the NOW Web site
  • F700 Series Field Service Guide
  • F800 Series Field Service Guide
  • The appropriate disk shelf guide

Preparing for the upgrade

To prepare for the upgrade, complete the following steps.

Note: The following steps assume that you are upgrading to an F800 with the same names and system IP addresses.

Step Action
1 Check the System Configuration Guide to ensure that the disk shelves and tape devices are supported on the F800 and to ensure that the network cards used in the F700 are supported in the F800. Also check the slot assignments for these cards.

Note: Check with the tape backup vendor to ensure that the backup utility is compatible with the NDMP backup application in Data ONTAP.

2 Check the Media Kit in the F800 packaging for the version of Data ONTAP installed on your F800. You must install the same version level of Data ONTAP on the F700 when you begin the upgrade procedure.
3 Go to the NOW site at http://now.netapp.com/NOW/main/software.shtml and download the F700 version of Data ONTAP that matches the version with the F800 series Media Kit.

Upgrading the F700

To upgrade your F700 to an F810, F820, or F840, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1 Untar the files you downloaded for the F700, then install Data ONTAP on your F700 by entering one of the following commands:
install_netapp
or
setup

Caution: Do not reboot the filer after the installation is complete.

2 Download the installed image to the disks by entering the following command:
download
3 Update the disk firmware by entering the following command:
disk_fw_update

Note: Disk I/O activity is suspended until disk firmware updating is completed.

4 Reboot the F700.
5 Install the F800 version of Data ONTAP on the F700.

Caution: Do not type download.

6

Edit the /etc/rc file in the root volume on the F700 to match the network adapter slot IDs in the F800. Make sure that you save the file on the F700.

Note: You might need to update the /etc/hosts file if host names contain appended interface IDs.

7 Halt the F700, then turn off the filer and disk shelves. Disconnect the filer from the power source, console, network, tape adapters, and Fibre Channel adapters connected to it.
8 Remove the F700 from the equipment rack and install the F800 in its place.
9 Recable the system to the components, as described in the F800 Series Hardware Guide, then apply power to the disk shelves.
10 Insert Disk 1 of the boot diskettes from the F800 media kit into the F800, then turn it on.
11 Boot the system by completing the following steps:
  1. Observe the console during boot, inserting the remaining boot diskettes when prompted.
  2. Select Menu item 2, when prompted by the boot menu.
  3. Select Boot without /etc/rc from the menu.
  4. Enter download at the console prompt.
12 Update the licenses on the F800 by entering the following command:
license add xxxx

Note: If you are using Data ONTAP 6.4 or earlier, the command is license option=code.

13 Remove the last boot diskette and reboot the F800. The system should boot properly. If it does not boot properly contact Customer Support for assistance.

Decommissioning the F700

The following procedure assumes that you are taking the F700 completely out of service and returning it to Network Appliance. To complete the decommissioning process, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1 Decommission the system through the NOW Web site at http://now.netapp.com/. Search for Decommission this System and follow the instructions.
2 Return the F700 to Network Appliance, as described in the SRA instructions shipped with the F800. Contact Customer Support at 408-822-6686, if you need the SRA instructions.
