Filer management through Windows administrative tools

Scope of Windows administrative tools descriptions  Top

You can accomplish some CIFS file access management tasks from the Data ONTAP command line by using Windows administrative tools, such as Server Manager and User Manager or Active Directory Users and Computers. This chapter describes both command line and Windows NT methods of accomplishing these tasks.

Note
You can also accomplish some tasks described in this chapter using other Windows server management tools, such as Microsoft Management Console.

This chapter assumes that you know how to start Server Manager or User Manager to access your filer, and that filer administrators for Active Directory networks know the Active Directory equivalents of the Windows NT server administration tasks described in this section.

How to use Server Manager and User Manager to manage the filer  Top

The procedures for managing the filer through Server Manager and User Manager are similar to those for managing a Windows server. If you are familiar with Server Manager and User Manager, you might simply note the differences between managing a filer and managing a Windows server. The procedures in this chapter provide detailed steps for those administration tasks where filer operations differ from a Windows server.

Case-sensitivity in Data ONTAP  Top

Unlike text you enter through Windows server administration tools, the Data ONTAP command line is case-sensitive. For example, when you specify a volume name in Server Manager, you can type in either lowercase or uppercase letters. You cannot use Windows tools to create a qtree named Test at the same level as a qtree named TEST, because Windows tools do not make a distinction between these names. You can create and distinguish these two qtrees from the Data ONTAP command line. For information about how such qtrees would appear to Windows clients, see Chapter 7, Understanding NFS and CIFS file naming.
