Changing the security style of a volume or a qtree

When to change the security style of a volume or qtree  Top

There are many circumstances in which you might want to change volume or qtree security style. Two examples are as follows:

Effects of changing the security style on quotas  Top

Changing the security style of a volume or a qtree requires quota reinitialization if quotas are in effect in the qtree or the volume. For information about how changing the security style affects quota calculation, see Effects of qtree changes on quotas.

Changing the security style of a volume or a qtree  Top

To change the security style of a volume or a qtree, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

qtree security [path {unix | ntfs | mixed}]

path is the path name of the volume or qtree.

Use unix for a UNIX qtree.

Use ntfs for an NTFS qtree.

Use mixed for a qtree with both UNIX and NTFS files.

2

If you have user quotas in effect on the qtree whose security style you just changed, turn quotas off and then on again using the quotas off volumename and quotas on volumename commands on the volume containing this qtree.

Reinitializing the quotas in this manner allows Data ONTAP to recalculate the quota usage for users who own files with ACL or UNIX security on this qtree.

Caution
There are two changes to the security style of a qtree that you cannot perform while CIFS is running and users are connected to shares on that qtree. You cannot change UNIX security style to mixed or NTFS. You also cannot change NTFS or mixed security style to UNIX.

Example with a qtree

To change the security style of /vol/users/docs to be the same as that of Windows NT, use the following command:

qtree security /vol/users/docs ntfs

Example with a volume

To change the security style of the root directory of the users volume to mixed, so that, outside a qtree in the volume, one file can have NTFS security and another file can have UNIX security, use the following command:

qtree security /vol/users/ mixed
