RAID Group Management

About this chapter  

This chapter describes how to manage RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) on filer volumes. Data ONTAP uses RAID Level 4 or RAID DP (double-parity) to ensure data integrity within a group of disks even if one or two of those disks fail.

• If a filer volume is configured for RAID 4 protection, Data ONTAP can reconstruct the data from a single failed disk within a RAID group and transfer that reconstructed data to a spare disk.
• If a filer volume is configured for RAID DP protection, Data ONTAP can reconstruct the data from one or two failed disks within a RAID group and transfer that reconstructed data to one or two spare disks as necessary.

  Note
  The RAID principles and management operations described in this chapter do not apply to gFiler gateways, which are supported by RAID systems specific to the storage subsystems that they manage.
