Handling of media errors during RAID reconstruction

About media error handling during RAID reconstruction  Top

By default, Data ONTAP, if it encounters media errors during a RAID reconstruction, automatically invokes an advanced mode process (wafliron) that compensates for the media errors and enables Data ONTAP to bypass the errors.

If this process is successful, RAID reconstruction continues, and the volume in which the error was detected remains online.

If you configure Data ONTAP so that it does not invoke this process or if this process fails, Data ONTAP attempts to place the affected volume in restricted mode. If restricted mode fails, the filer panics, and after a reboot, Data ONTAP brings up the affected volume in restricted mode. In this mode, you can manually invoke the wafliron process in advanced mode or schedule downtime for your filer for reconciling the error by running the WAFL_check command from the Boot menu.

Purpose of the raid.reconstruction.wafliron.enable option  Top

The raid.reconstruction.wafliron.enable option determines whether Data ONTAP automatically starts the wafliron process after detecting medium errors during RAID reconstruction. By default, the option is set to On.

Recommendation

Network Appliance recommends that you leave the raid.reconstruction.wafliron.enable option at its default option to increase data availability.
