To enable a filer for basic management by a commercial NDMP backup application, you must enable the filer's NDMP support, specify the backup application's configured NDMP version, host IP address, and authentication method. If an operator with non-root privileges to the filer is using a backup application, a filer-generated NDMP-specific password must be used by that user to carry out backup operations on that filer.
To prepare a filer for NDMP management, complete the following steps.
| 1 | Enable NDMP. At the console command line of target filer, enter: ndpmd on For details see Enabling or disabling NDMP service. |
| 2 | Specify the NPMD version to support on your filer. The version must match the version configured for your NDMP backup application. Enter: For details see Specifying a preferred network interface. |
| 3 | If you want to specify a restricted set of NDMP backup application hosts that can connect to the filer, enter: options ndmpd.access hosts hosts is a comma-separated list of host names or IP addresses of nodes permitted to start NDMP sessions with the filer. If you do not wish to restrict NDMP access to this filer by host, do not set this option. By default NDMP does not restrict access by host. For details see Specifying NDMP access by host or interface. |
| 4 | Specify the authentication type (plaintext, challenge, or plaintext and challenge) required for an NDMP connection to this filer. For example: options ndmpd authtype plaintext, challenge This setting must include the authentication type supported by the NDMP backup application. For details see Specifying the NDMP authentication type. |
| 5 | If operators with non-root privilege on the filer will be carrying out tape backup operations through the NDMP backup application:
