HTTP server steps

About using an HTTP server to download Data ONTAP  Top

If you have an HTTP server with the latest Data ONTAP upgrades accessible to your filer, you can use the software command to download and install Data ONTAP to your filer. When you use HTTP to download Data ONTAP, you do not have to mount the filer to a UNIX administration host or map a drive to the filer using Windows to perform the installation.

You can download Data ONTAP upgrades to both single and clustered filers.

For more information, see the NetApp software(1) man page.

Preparing the HTTP server  Top

To prepare the HTTP server, copy the setup.exe file (for example, 652_setup_i.exe) from the NOW site or another system to the directory on the HTTP server from which you will serve the file.

Copying Data ONTAP to your filer without installing  Top

You can copy a Data ONTAP upgrade to your filer without immediately installing it, for instance, if you want to perform the installation at a later time. The downloaded file is saved on the filer in the /etc/software directory.

To copy Data ONTAP onto your filer without installing the software, complete the following step from the filer console.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

software get url -f filename

url is the HTTP location from which you want to download Data ONTAP.

Use the following URL syntax if you need to specify a username, password, host or port to access files on the HTTP server:

http://username:password@host:port/path

Use the -f flag to overwrite an existing software file of the same name in the filer's /etc/software directory. If a file of the same name exists and you do not use the -f flag, the download will fail and you will be prompted to use -f.

filename is the file name you specify for the software file being downloaded to your filer. If no destination file name is specified, Data ONTAP uses the file name listed in the URL from which you are downloading and places the copy in the /etc/software directory on the filer.

Example

The following is an example of the software get command using a new destination file name.

software get
http://www.myserver.com/netapp/R652/pc/652_setup_i.exe
652_setup_i.exe

Result

You see a message similar to the following:

software: copying to /etc/software/652_setup_i.exe
software: 100% file read from location.
software: /etc/software/652_setup_i.exe has been copied.
