About NDMP |
Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) is an open protocol that improves network-based data backup.
After you enable NDMP service on the filer, you can use third-party backup management software that supports NDMP Version 1, 2, or 3 to back up or restore the filer.
Using NDMP-compliant third-party backup management software offers the following advantages over using the filer dump and restore commands:
You can execute more parallel backup and recovery operations. The filer supports up to 100 NDMP sessions.
You can select a backup program that best meets your administrative needs. For example, you can use an NDMP-compliant backup program that provides a graphical user interface for scheduling backups.
NDMP-compliant software can back up the filer to remote tape drives faster than the filer dump command.
NDMP-compliant software can back up the filer to tape libraries. You can't back up the filer to tape libraries using the dump command.
It is easier to use NDMP to manage tape devices than to use the filer dump and restore commands.
Take the following considerations into account when using the NDMP service on your filer:
Do not use a third-party network management program that uses port 10,000 on the filer. The NDMP daemon uses port 10,000 to listen to the filer and NDMP service does not function properly if you use such a program.
Do not use passwords that are more than eight characters if you use the MD5 authentication method to authenticate an NDMP-compliant device to the filer running NDMP service.
