By default, Data ONTAP converts a directory format from pre-Data ONTAP 4.0 to Unicode only when a CIFS client accesses that directory.
You can optimize the CIFS client's access to an NFS directory by converting the existing NFS directories to Unicode format.
The default setting for this field is Off.
Setting this field to On causes all directories on a volume to be converted to Unicode format. Select On to facilitate file sharing and eliminate conversion time.
Setting this field to Off causes NFS directories to remain in a format that uses only NFS names. The first time a CIFS client accesses such a directory, it converts the directory to Unicode format. CIFS directories remain in Unicode format. Select Off to save space or do not use your filer for CIFS.
