Changing workload distribution with SnapMover

About this section  Top

This section provides instructions for how to use SnapMover with the vFiler technology provided by the MultiStore software to move the workload from one gFiler to another.

Preparing for the use of SnapMover  Top

Before you can move a vFiler you must prepare for using SnapMover by completing the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Install a SnapMover and MultiStore license on each of the two gFilers.

2

On the source gFiler, create a volume by following the instructions in Creating a volume.

Example command entry:

vol create vfl 2

volume create is the command for creating the volume.

vf1 is the name of the volume.

2 is the number of LUNs to put in the volume.

Ensure that the volume name is not the same as the name of any volume on the destination gFiler.

3

Enter the following command to create a vFiler on the source gFiler:

vfiler create <vfilername> -i <ipaddress> <pathname>

Answer the prompts. In most cases, you can press the Enter key to accept the defaults. You need to specify the interface to use, however.

Moving a volume-level vFiler  Top

The operation that is described in the following procedure is a pull operation; that is, you perform this operation on the gFiler to which you want the volume-level vFiler transferred (the destination gFiler). You do not have to shut down the destination gFiler to perform this operation on it.

To move a volume-level vFiler to the destination gFiler, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

On the destination gFiler, enter the following command:

vfiler migrate -m nocopy <source_vfiler>@<source_gfiler>

source_vfiler is the name of the vfiler that you are moving

source_gfiler is the gFiler from which you are moving the vfiler.

2

Answer the prompts, including providing the following:

    1. A valid administrative login ID and password
    2. The IP address and binding information for the destination vfiler.

Result

The vFiler is migrated from the source gFiler to the destination gFiler.

3

Verify that the vFiler was moved by entering the following command on the destination gFiler:

vfiler status -r
