Installing the software from a UNIX client

When to perform UNIX client steps  Top

Perform the steps described in this section only if you are using a UNIX workstation to install Data ONTAP on the gateway.

Procedure overview  Top

This part of the installation involves performing the following procedures in order:

  1. Mounting the gateway root volume on your host
  2. Copying the system files to your client from the CD-ROM
  3. Installing the system files

    Note
To perform the installation, you need access to both the gateway's system console and a client system.

Mounting the gateway on your client  Top

To mount the gateway on your UNIX client, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Make files and directories available for mounting by entering the following command on the console:

exportfs -a
2

Create a directory on the client where you want to mount the gateway root file system:

mkdir /mnt/gfiler

/mnt/gfiler is the directory on the client where you want to mount the gateway root file system.

3

Mount the gateway's root file system to the clients's /mnt/gfiler directory:

mount gfilername:/ /mnt/gfiler

gfilername is the name of the gateway.

4

Change the host directory to /mnt/gFiler.

cd /mnt/gFiler

/mnt/gfiler is the directory on the client where you mounted the gateway's root file system.

Copying the system files from the CD-ROM  Top

To access the system files from the CD-ROM and copy them to your host, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Mount the Data ONTAP CD-ROM onto your host.

2

From the host, extract the files by entering the following command:

tar xvf /CD-ROM_MNT_PT/ONTAP/release/x86/SYSFILES.TAR

/CD-ROM_MNT_PT is the name of your CD-ROM mount point.

release is the Data ONTAP release number on the CD-ROM.

Result

The tar command extracts the files and reports the names; they are tar_image.Z and install_netapp.

3

Complete the procedure described in Installing the system files.

Installing the system files  Top

To install the system files, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

If you want to...

Then...

Delete the tar files after the files are extracted

From the host, enter the following command:

./install_netapp /mnt/gfiler

/mnt/gfiler is the directory on the host where you mounted the gateway's root file system.

Keep the tar files after the files are extracted

From the host, enter the following command:

./install_netapp -k /mnt/gfiler

/mnt/gfiler is the directory on the host where you mounted the gateway's root file system.

Result:

The install script decompresses and extracts the files.

2

From the client, unmount the gateway's root file system (/) by entering the following commands:

cd /
umount /mnt/gfiler

/mnt/gfiler is the directory on the client where you mounted the gateway's root file system.

3

Complete the procedure in Downloading Data ONTAP to download the boot data on the gFiler.
