Tips for upgrading to Data ONTAP 6.5.1

Tips for a smooth conversion  

Starting with Data ONTAP 6.5, support for larger inodes is provided. For the smoothest conversion to larger inodes, keep the following tips in mind before upgrading to Data ONTAP 6.5.1:

• Upgrade during non-peak hours.
• Keep the gFiler workload moderate to enable faster upgrade.
• If you are serving files with the CIFS protocol, ensure that the file system is not 100% full.
• Avoid performing a quota initialization prior to upgrading. If a quota initialization is begun prior to upgrading, wait for the initialization to be completed.

  Note
  Depending on your system, the 6.5.1 upgrade from a pre-6.5 release can take several hours. During the upgrade, the gFiler continues to serve data, however. An upgrade within the 6.5 release family takes less time.

Rules for reverting to an earlier release  

If you begin upgrading to Data ONTAP 6.5.1 and then decide that you want to revert to an earlier Data ONTAP release, you must complete the 6.5.1 upgrade before reverting.

You should revert to an earlier release only with the assistance of NetApp staff or your authorized reseller. For more information, see Chapter 4, Reverting 6.5.1 Software to a Previous Release. Also, the following guidelines apply:

• If you are reverting to a release prior to 6.5, you must disable any 6.5 family features before reverting.
• Reverting more than once is not recommended.
