Required documentation, tools, and equipment
Required documentation
NetApp hardware and service documentation is not contained within a single guide. Instead, the field-replaceable units are documented as separate flyers at http://now.netapp.com/.
The following table lists and briefly describes the documentation you might need to reference when preparing a new cluster, or converting two stand-alone systems into a clustered system.

System Cabinet Guide
This guide describes how to install NetApp equipment into a system cabinet.
Site Requirements Guide
This guide describes the physical requirements your site must meet to install NetApp equipment.
The appropriate disk shelf guide
These guides describe how to cable a disk shelf to a NetApp storage system.
The appropriate hardware guide:
- F800 Series Hardware Guide
- FAS900 Series Hardware and Service Guide
- FAS3000 series documentation
These guides describe how to install the storage system, connect it to a network, and bring it up for the first time.
NetApp Diagnostics Guide
This guide describes the diagnostics tests that you can run on the storage system.
Upgrade Guide
This guide describes how to upgrade storage system and disk firmware, and how to upgrade storage system software.
Data Protection Online Backup and Recovery Guide
This guide describes, among other topics, SyncMirror technology, which is used for mirrored clusters.
System Administration Guide
This guide describes general storage system administration.
Software Setup Guide
This guide describes how to configure the software of a new storage system for the first time.
Required tools
The following list specifies the tools you need to install the cluster:
- #1 and #2 Phillips screwdrivers
- Hand level
- Marker
Required equipment
When you receive your cluster, you should receive the equipment listed in the following table. See the System Configuration Guide at http://now.netapp.com to confirm your storage system type, storage capacity, etc.
Required equipment
Standard or mirrored cluster
Storage system type
Two of the same type of FAS3000, FAS900, or F800 series storage systems.
Storage
See the System Configuration Guide.
Cluster interconnect adapter
IB cluster adapter
(The NVRAM5 functions as the cluster interconnect adapter on FAS900 series and FAS3000 series storage systems.)
FC-AL or FC HBA (FC HBA for Disk) adapters
Minimum of two FC-AL adapters
Fibre Channel switches
N/A
SFP (Small Form Pluggable) modules
N/A
NVRAM5 cluster adapter media converter
Only if using fiber cabling.
Cables (provided with shipment unless otherwise noted)
- One optical cable per port on the dual Fibre Channel adapter
or One HSSDC to DB-9 node-to-shelf cable per disk loop
- Multiple DB-9 shelf-to-shelf cables
- For systems using NVRAM5, two 4xIB copper cables, or two 4xIB optical cables
Note You must purchase longer optical cables separately for cabling distances greater than 30 meters.
- Two optical cables with media converters for the IB cluster adapter
Note Clusters that have FC9 disk shelves require one MIA (media interface adapter) for each input LRC on the first disk shelves only.
