Stage 1: Bringing up the cluster for the first time
What to do to bring up the cluster
After cabling the nodes and storage together, you must connect the cluster to the network, apply power to the system, and configure the nodes of the cluster.
Bringing up the new cluster
To bring up the cluster for the first time, complete the following steps.
Step
Action
1
Connect both nodes to the network, as described in the hardware and service documentation.
2
Turn on the power to the disk shelves and wait 30 seconds for the electronics to complete initialization.

Storage systems that were already in use
- Turn on the power to both storage
systems and wait for the system
prompt.
Attention Press the Delete key to stop booting if the system starts to boot.
- Proceed to Stage 2: Running
diagnostics.
New storage systems
Apply power; the storage systems enter the setup program automatically.
Proceed to Step 4.

Use the setup program to configure both storage systems.

About running setup on clustered systems
When the setup program runs on a storage system that is set up for clustering, setup prompts you to answer some questions specific for clusters. The following list outlines some of the questions about your installation that you should think about before proceeding through the setup program:
- Do you want to configure virtual interfaces (VIFs) for your network interfaces?
For information about VIFs, see the Network Management Guide.
Note
You are advised to use VIFs with clusters to reduce SPOF (single-points-of-failure).
- How do you want to configure your interfaces for takeover?
Using setup to configure shared interfaces
To use setup to configure shared interfaces, complete the following steps.
Step
Action
1
Enter the IP address for the interface you are configuring.
Example
Please enter the IP address for Network Interface e0
[]:nnn.nn.nn.nnn
nnn.nn.nn.nnn is the local address for the node you are configuring.
2
Enter the netmask for the interface you are configuring, or press Return if the default value is correct.
Example
Please enter the netmask for Network Interface e1
[255.255.0.0]:
3
Specify that this interface is to take over a partner IP address.
Example
Should interface e1 take over a partner IP address during
failover? [n]: y
4
Enter the IP address or interface name of the partner.
Example
Please enter the IP address or interface name to be taken
over by e1 []: nnn.nn.nn.nnn
Note If the partner is a VIF, you must the interface name.
Using setup to configure dedicated interfaces
To use setup to configure dedicated interfaces, complete the following steps.
Step
Action
3
Specify that this interface does not take over a partner IP address.
Example
Should interface e1 take over a partner IP address during
failover? [n]: n
Using setup to configure standby interfaces
To use setup to configure standby interfaces, complete the following steps.
Step
Action
1
Do not enter an IP address for a standby interface, press Return.
Example
Please enter the IP address for Network Interface e0 []:
2
Specify that this interface is to take over a partner IP address.
Example
Should interface e1 take over a partner IP address during
failover? [n]: y
3
Enter the IP address or interface name of the partner.
Example
Please enter the IP address or interface name to be taken
over by e1 []: nnn.nn.nn.nnn
Note If the partner is a VIF, you must use the interface name.
