Adding disk shelves to a cluster

About adding disk shelves to a cluster  Top

For FAS3000 and FAS900 series systems

You can add a DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelf to a cluster that is made up of DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves without powering down your cluster. This enables you to add (but not swap) disk shelves without a service interruption. However, you cannot add more disk shelves to your cluster than your cluster can support. See http://now.netapp.com for the amount of storage your cluster can support.

Attention
Hot-adding a disk shelf is different from hot-swapping a disk shelf. Hot-swapping a disk shelf, which means removing an existing disk shelf and installing a new one in its place, is not supported. Your system supports hot-adding of disk shelves only.

For F800 series systems

One FC-AL interface can connect up to eight daisy-chained disk shelves (four for DS14 disk shelves) per FC-AL adapter. You must add an additional FC-AL adapter to each of your storage systems for every set of eight disk shelves you add, up to the maximum of FC-AL adapters supported by your storage system. See the F800 Series Field Service Guide for FC-AL installation information.

Note
See the System Configuration Guide at http://now.netapp.com for the maximum number of FC-AL adapters your storage system supports, and for additional restrictions.

Restrictions for adding disk shelves to any cluster  Top

The following table lists some of the restrictions for adding disk shelves to your cluster. See the DiskShelf14 and DiskShelf14mk2 FC Hardware Guide for a detailed discussion of restrictions.

If your cluster has...

And you are...

Then...

FC7 or FC8 disk shelves

Adding FC9 disk shelves in the same loop

Disk shelf 0 must be an FC7 disk shelf.

FC7, FC8, or FC9 disk shelves

Adding DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves with LRCs

A DS14/DS14mk2 FC must be the last disk shelf in the loop.

DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves with ESH or ESH2 modules

Hot-adding a disk shelf

  • Disks should be pre-zeroed and used as spares.
  • You can only hot-add a DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelf to an existing DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelf.
  • A DS14/DS14mk2 FC must be the last disk shelf in the loop.
  • DS14/DS14mk2 FC disk shelves with ESH or ESH2 modules can only be added to disk shelf loops with ESH or ESH2 modules.
  • If the new disk shelf is a DS14mk2 FC, the loop speed switch must be set for the appropriate installation.

DS14mk2 AT disk shelves with AT-FCX modules

Hot-adding a disk shelf

  • Disks should be pre-zeroed and used as spares.
  • You can only hot-add a DS14mk2 AT disk shelf to an existing DS14mk2 AT disk shelf.
  • DS14mk2 AT disk shelves with AT-FCX modules can only be added to disk shelf loops with AT-FCX modules.

Adding a disk shelf to a cluster  Top

To add a disk shelf to a cluster, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Determine whether disk shelf counting is enabled by entering the following command:

options cf.takeover.on_disk_shelf_miscompare
2

If the disk shelf counting option is set to On, turn it off by entering the following command:

options cf.takeover.on_disk_shelf_miscompare off
3

Install the new disk shelf in your cabinet or equipment rack, as described in the DiskShelf14 and DiskShelf14mk2 FC Hardware Guide.

4

Verify that the new disk shelf ID is unique by entering the following command:

fcstat device_map

Result

Shelf IDs for all Fibre Channel devices are listed.

5

If...

Then, for loops with...

Disk shelves in the loop to which you are adding the new disk shelf have LRCs

  • DS14 only: Go to Step 6.
  • A mix of DS14 and DS14mk2 FC: Set the loop speed to 1 Gb.

    Attention
An incorrectly set loop speed results in an open loop condition.

Disk shelves in the loop to which you are adding the new disk shelf have either ESH or ESH2 modules exclusively, or AT-FCX modules exclusively

  • DS14 only or a mix of DS14 and DS14mk2 FC: Set the loop speed to 1 Gb.
  • DS14mk2 FC only that are running at 1 Gb: Set the loop speed to 1 Gb.
  • DS14mk2 FC only that are running at 2 Gb: Set the loop speed to 2 Gb.
  • AT-FCX modules, the loop speed is set automatically

    Attention
An incorrectly set loop speed causes the storage system to panic. Disk shelves containing AT-FCX modules cannot be on the same loop as ESH/ESH2 modules.

6

Plug in the new disk shelf and turn it on. Then wait 60 seconds for the disk shelf to fully power up and all electronics to come online.

7

Attach the cable to the Input port of the new disk shelf.

8

Attach the other end of the cable to the Output port of the last existing disk shelf in the loop.

9

Set both terminate switches (except for ESH2 and AT-FCX, which don't have them) on the new disk shelf to On.

10

Set both terminate switches (except for ESH2 and AT-FCX) on the previous disk shelf to Off.

11

If disk shelf counting was on, reenable it by entering the following command:

options cf.takeover.on_disk_shelf_miscompare on
