Connecting an R200 disk shelf
About connecting disk shelves to the storage engine
The following section describes how to cable the disk shelves to the storage engine. They are connected to the storage engine in pairs, one for each loop. Disk shelf numbering begins at the storage engine with disk shelf one and progresses outward to the maximum number of disk shelves for each loop.
Disk shelf cabling requirements
The following table lists the cabling requirements for the disk shelves.
Type of device
Cabling requirements
AT-FC
- Uses LC to LC cables to connect to optical FC-AL adapters.
- Uses HSSDC2-to-HSSDC2 cables for connections between disk shelves with AT-FC.
- Uses HSSDC2-to-SFP cables for connections between a disk shelf with AT-FC and a disk shelf with AT-FC2.
AT-FC2
- Requires an optical SFP in the input port and an LC to LC cable to connect to optical FC-AL adapters.
- Uses SFP-to-SFP cables for connections between disk shelves with AT-FC2.
- Uses HSSDC2-to-SFP cables for connections between a disk shelf with AT-FC2 and a disk shelf with AT-FC.

Sequence of disk shelf connections
Connect the disk shelves to the storage engine in the sequence shown in the following figure.
Connecting the disk shelves to the storage engine
To connect the disk shelves to the storage engine, complete the following steps, using the figure for reference.
Step
Action
1
Verify that your NetApp appliance meets the minimum software requirements to support the disk shelf and module combination. See the System Configuration Guide at http://now.netapp.com for more information.
2
Put on the antistatic wrist strap and grounding leash.
3
Make sure that the storage engine and disk shelves are turned off.
4
If the disk shelf has...
Then...
An AT-FC module
- Connect one end of the
LC/LC optical cable to one
of the ports on the Fibre
Channel adapter.
- Connect the other end to the
Input port of the first disk
shelf of the loop.
An AT-FC2 module
- Connect one end of the
LC/LC optical cable to one
of the ports on the Fibre
Channel adapter.
- Connect the other end to the
optical SFP in the Input port
of the first disk shelf of the
loop.
5
Repeat Step 4 for the remaining port on the Fibre Channel adapter.
6
If your system has more than two disk shelf loops, repeat Step 4 and Step 5 for each additional pair of disk shelf loops.
7
If the disk shelf has...
Then...
An AT-FC module
- Connect one end of the
HSSDC2 shelf-to-shelf
cable to the Output port of
the first disk shelf in the
loop.
- Connect the other end to the
Input port of the next disk
shelf in the loop.
An AT-FC2 module
- Connect one end of the SFP-
to-SFP patch cables to the
Output port of the first disk
shelf in the loop.
- Connect the other end to the
Input port of the next disk
shelf in the loop.
8
Repeat Step 7 until all disk shelves in the loops are cabled.
9
Set the Terminate switches to OFF on all but the last disk shelf in each loop. Set the Terminate switch to ON on the last disk shelf in each loop.
10
Set the disk shelf ID, from 1 to 6, for each disk shelf in both loops.
