Managing the FCP service on systems with onboard ports
Storage systems with onboard ports
The following systems have onboard FCP adapters, or ports, that you can configure to connect to disk shelves or to operate in SAN target mode:
- FAS270 models
- FAS3000 models
FAS270 storage systems
FAS270 onboard ports
A FAS270 storage system provides two independent Fibre Channel ports identified as Fibre Channel B (with a blue label) and Fibre Channel C (with an orange label):
- You use the Fibre Channel B port to communicate to internal and external disks.
- You can configure the Fibre Channel C port in one of two modes:
- You use initiator mode to communicate with tape backup devices such as in a TapeSAN backup configuration.
- You use target mode to communicate with SAN hosts or a front end SAN switch.
The Fibre Channel C port does not support mixed initiator/target mode. The default mode for this port is initiator mode. If you want to license the FCP service and connect the FAS270 to a SAN, you have to configure this port to operate in SAN target mode.
FAS270 cluster configuration example
FAS270 cluster configurations in dual_fabric mode must be cabled to switches that support public loop topology. To connect a FAS270 cluster to a fabric topology that includes switches that only support point-to-point topology, such as McDATA Director class switches, you must connect the cluster to an edge switch and use this switch as a bridge to the fabric.
FAS270 models also support single_image mode. If you upgrade your configuration to single_image mode, there are no switch restrictions. For information about changing your cfmode setting, see the Fibre Channel Configuration Guide, available from the following URL:
http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/san/fcp_iscsi_config/QuickRef/FCPConfigurationGuide.pdf
The following figure shows an example configuration in which a multi-attached host accesses a FAS270 cluster. For information about specific switch models supported and fabric configuration guidelines, see the online NetApp Fibre Channel Configuration Guide at the following URL: http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/san/fcp_iscsi_config/QuickRef/

series systems
FAS300 series onboard ports
The FAS3000 has four onboard Fibre Channel ports that have orange labels and are numbered 0a, 0b, 0c, 0d. Each port can be configured to operate in one of the following modes:
- SAN target mode, in which they connect to Fibre Channel switches or fabric.
- Initiator mode, in which they connect to disk shelves.
The operating mode of the Fibre Channel port depends on your configuration. See the following sections for information about the two recommended SAN configurations:
FAS3000 configuration with two Fibre Channel ports
The following figure shows the default SAN configuration in which a multi-attached host accesses a FAS3000 cluster. You cable the Fibre Channel ports as follows:
- Port 0a and 0b connect to the local and partner disk shelves.
- Port 0c and 0d connect to each FCP switch or fabric.
For detailed cabling instructions, see the Installation and Setup Instructions flyer that shipped with your system.
In this configuration, partner mode is the only supported cfmode of each node in the cluster. On each node in the cluster, port 0c provides access to local LUNs, and port 0d provides access to LUNs on the partner. This configuration requires that multipathing software is installed on the host.
If you order a FAS3000 system with the FCP license, ports 0a and 0b are preconfigured to operate in initiator mode. Ports 0c and 0d are preconfigured to operate in SAN target mode.
FAS3000 configuration using four onboard ports
The following example shows a configuration that uses all four onboard Fibre Channel ports to connect to the SAN. On each storage system in the cluster, ports 0a and 0c connect to Switch/Fabric 1. Ports 0b and 0d connect to Switch/Fabric 2. Each storage system has two 64-bit Fibre Channel HBAs, which are used to connect to local and partner disk shelves.
In this configuration, the default cfmode of each node in the cluster is partner. On each node in the cluster, port 0a and 0c provide access to local LUNs, and ports 0b and 0d provide access to LUNs on the partner. This configuration requires that multipathing software is installed on the host.
Note
This configuration also supports the other cfmode settings. For information on changing the default cfmode from partner to another setting, see the online NetApp Fibre Channel Configuration Guide at http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/san/fcp_iscsi_config/QuickRef/
FCPConfigurationGuide.pdf.
If you ordered this configuration, then all four onboard ports are preconfigured to operate in target mode. If you have the two-port Fibre Channel configuration and want to upgrade to this configuration, then you have to configure ports 0c and 0d to operate in target mode by using the fcadmin config command.
