Managing igroups

Tasks to manage igroups  Top

Creating an igroup using the Data ONTAP command line  Top

To create an igroup, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

igroup create -f [-t ostype] initiator_group [node_name...] [-a portset]

-f indicates that it is an FCP igroup.

-t ostype indicates the operating system of the host. The values are solaris, windows, hpux, aix, linux, netware or vmware.

initiator_group is the name of the igroup you specify.

node_name is an FCP WWPN. You can specify more than one WWPN.

-a portset binds the igroup to a portset. A portset is a group of target FCP ports. When you bind an igroup to a portset, any host in the igroup can access the LUNs only by connecting to the target ports in the portset. For details about portsets, see Making LUNs available on specific FCP target ports.

Example

igroup create -f -t aix aix-group5 50:06:0b:00:00:10:a7:00
50:06:0b:00:00:10:a6:06

Creating an igroup using the sanlun command (UNIX hosts)  Top

If you have a UNIX host, you can run the sanlun command on the host to create an igroup. The command obtains the host's WWPNs and prints out the igroup create command with the correct arguments. You can then copy and paste this command into the storage system's command line.

To create an igroup by using the sanlun command, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Ensure that you are logged in as root on the host.

2

Change to the /opt/NetApp/santools/bin directory.

3

Enter the following command to print a command to be run on the storage system that creates an igroup containing all the HBAs on your host:

./sanlun fcp show adapter -c

-c prints the full igroup create command on the screen.

Result

An igroup create command with the host's WWPNs appears on the screen. The igroup's name matches the name of the host.

Example

Enter this filer command to create an initiator group for
this system:
igroup create -f -t aix "hostA" 10000000AA11BB22
10000000AA11EE33

In this example, the name of the host is "hostA," so the name of the igroup with the two WWPNs is "hostA."

4

On the host in a different session, use the telnet command to access the storage system.

5

Copy the igroup create command from Step 3, paste the command on the storage system's command line, and press Enter to run the igroup command on the storage system.

Result

An igroup is created on the storage system.

6

On the storage system's command line, enter the following command to verify the newly created igroup:

igroup show

Result

The newly created igroup with the host's WWPNs is displayed.

Example

filerX> igroup show
    hostA (FCP) (ostype: aix):
        10:00:00:00:AA:11:BB:22
        10:00:00:00:AA:11:EE:33

Destroying an igroup  Top

To destroy one or more existing igroups, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

If you want to...

Then enter this command...

Remove LUNs mapped to an igroup before deleting the igroup

lun unmap lun_path igroup

Example

lun unmap /vol/vol2/qtree/LUN10 aix-group5

Delete one or more igroups

igroup destroy igroup [igroup,...]

Example

igroup destroy aix-group5

Remove all LUN maps for an igroup and delete the igroup with one command

igroup destroy -f igroup [igroup ...]

Example

igroup destroy -f aix-group5

Adding an initiator  Top

To add an initiator to an igroup, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

igroup add igroup WWPN

Caution
When adding initiators to an igroup, ensure that each initiator sees only one LUN at a given LUN ID.

Example

igroup add aix-group2 10:00:00:00:c9:2b:02:1f

Result

You added the second port of Host2 to the igroup aix-group2.

Removing an initiator  Top

To remove an initiator from an igroup, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

igroup remove igroup WWPN

Example

igroup remove aix-group1 10:00:00:00:c9:2b:7c:0f

Displaying initiators  Top

To display all the initiators in the specified igroup, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

igroup show [igroup]

Example

igroup show aix-group3

Setting the ostype  Top

To set the operating system type (ostype) for an igroup, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command.

igroup set igroup ostype value

igroup is the name of the igroup.

value is the ostype of the igroup. The ostypes of initiators are solaris, windows, hpux, aix, linux, netware and vmware. If your host OS is not one of these values but it is listed as a supported OS in the FCP compatibility matrix, specify default.

For information about supported hosts and operating systems, see the NetApp FCP SAN Compatibility Matrix at http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/san/fcp_iscsi_config/
fcp_support.shtml.

Example

igroup set aix-group3 ostype aix
