Using traditional volumes

Upgrading to Data ONTAP 7.0 or later  Top

If you are upgrading to Data ONTAP 7.0 or later software from an earlier version, your existing volumes are preserved as traditional volumes. Your volumes and data remain unchanged, and the commands you used to manage your volumes and data are still supported for backward compatibility.

As you learn more about FlexVol volumes, you might want to migrate your data from traditional volumes to FlexVol volumes. For information about migrating traditional volumes to FlexVol volumes, see Migrating between traditional volumes and FlexVol volumes.

About traditional volumes  Top

With traditional volumes, you can use the aggr and aggr options commands or FilerView to manage the volume's containing aggregate. For backward compatibility, you can also use the vol and the vol options commands to manage the traditional volume's containing aggregate.

The following table describes how to create and manage traditional volumes using either the aggr or the vol commands, and FilerView, depending on whether you are managing the physical or logical layers of that volume.

Traditional volume task, using FilerView, if available

Using the aggr command

Using the vol command

Create a volume

In FilerView:

Volumes > Add

aggr create trad_vol -v -m
{disk-list | size}

Creates a traditional volume and defines a set of disks to include in that volume or defines the size of the volume.

The -v option designates that trad_vol is a traditional volume.

Use -m to enable SyncMirror.

For backward compatibility:

vol create trad_vol -m
{disk-list | size}

Add disks

In FilerView:

Volumes > Manage.
Click the trad_vol name you want to add disks to.
The Volume Properties page appears.
Click Add disks.
The Volume Wizard appears.

aggr add trad_vol disks

For backward compatibility:

vol add trad_vol disks

Create a SyncMirror replica

In FilerView:

For new aggregates: Aggregates > Add

For existing aggregates: Aggregates > Manage.
Click trad_vol.
The Aggregate properties page appears.
Click Mirror
Click OK

aggr mirror

For backward compatibility:

vol mirror

Set the root volume option

This option can be used on only one volume per storage system. For more information on root volumes, see How volumes are used.

Not applicable.

vol options trad_vol root

If the root option is set on a traditional volume, that volume becomes the root volume for the storage system on the next reboot.

Set RAID level (raidtype) options

In FilerView:

For new aggregates: Aggregates > Add

For existing aggregates: Aggregates > Manage.
Click trad_vol.
Click Modify

aggr options trad_vol
{ raidsize number | raidtype level}

For backward compatibility:

vol options trad_vol
{ raidsize number | raidtype level}

Set up SnapLock volume

aggr create trad_vol -v -r -L
disk-list

For backward compatibility:

vol create trad_vol -r
-L
disk-list

Split a SyncMirror relationship

aggr split

For backward compatibility:

vol split

RAID level scrub

In FilerView:

Aggregates >
Configure RAID

aggr scrub start
aggr scrub suspend
aggr scrub stop
aggr scrub resume
aggr scrub status

Manages RAID-level error scrubbing of the disks.

See Automatic and manual disk scrubs.

For backward compatibility:

vol scrub start
vol scrub suspend
vol scrub stop
vol scrub resume
vol scrub status

Media level scrub

aggr media_scrub t_vol

Manages media error scrubbing of disks in the traditional volume.

See Continuous media scrub.

For backward compatibility:

vol media_scrub t_vol

Verify that two SyncMirror plexes are identical

aggr verify

For backward compatibility:

vol verify
